A first time attempt: Polish my Fällkniven NL2 to mirror finish

After some experimentation and some really hard work, a Fällkniven NL2 Odin with mirror polished blade emerges (stock photo as comparison). It is not 100% perfect, there are some minor imperfections that can be seen close-up and at certain angles with good light, but it is nearly there. The edge/grind of the blade that is from different steet is not mirror polished by purpose. Took about 8 hours of work including some extra time due to experimentation and mistakes (starting at too high grit). Started with sandpaper (grit): 120, 240, 400, 800, 1200 and 2000. Continued with a cloth with 5u, 3u, 1u and 0.5u polishing compounds.

I think I like the blade better this way (stock photo as comparison), what do you think?

Yep - that is a lot of work invested. Looking very nice. And mirror polish seals off the surface from the elements as much as is possible.

I like it.

Very nice! Excellent job!

Now go outside, use it hard like it is supposed to be used, and scratch it up!

Looking good!

There's a lot of work behind that finish!

Very nice! What cloths did you use? Any particular brand paste?

I used Luxor's polishing compounds: Red (5u or 6.5u, not sure), green (3u), blue (1u) and final finish with yellow (0.5u). Cotton cloth works fine with these. They work great with strops as well (obviously).

Good lord that polish is beautiful, and you did that by hand?!? Nice work. 8 hours is no small amount of effort.

Thanks. Yeah, I did it by hand. Partly because I lack the tools, but even more because I wanted to do it by hand ... sort of more personal that way. I could have done a better job in 6 hours, but I made the mistake of not using 120 grit enough aggressively at the start so I had to sort of start over and wasted few hours because of that.

Either way it looks great. This is tempting to me for a knife or two I have.

Hej/Päivää/Good evening, Christian!
