As I said in an earlier post, the Bundok deal from KA-BAR is my first time getting any Beckers. They were delivered today, and I left work a bit early to go get them and see what I was missing. So I've had them for a few hours now. I've got to say, I'm liking them. There are a few small fit and finish things, but nothing huge, and nothing a deal breaker.
I really wish I had gotten the BK5 earlier. It feels great in the hand, and I love the sweep of the blade. I can tell it is going to be a great slicing knife. The handles are a little off on the top, especially on the left side, so I could see a hot spot developing there, but I was thinking about getting new handles for it anyway. Now I have to choose between micarta or G10. And I'm also going to be getting a new sheath, as it rattles quite a bit in this one (it's the only one of the three that does, probably due to the thinner blade). Like I said, none of these little things is a deal breaker. It's still an awesome knife I wish I'd gotten much earlier.
The BK4 is certainly an interesting knife. It is smaller than I thought it would be, not by much, and not in a bad way. I thought it looked awkward and ungainly in pictures, but holding it really changes your mind quickly. I can tell that this will be incredibly useful around camp, and around the fire. The flat part of the blade closest to the handle is set just perfectly for fine, up close carving, thanks to the angle it sits at from the handle. My only issue is that this section of blade, from the handle to where it curves outward came very dull. There is almost no edge to it at all. The hatchet portion of the blade is incredibly sharp, but not the first part of the blade. Again, not a huge deal, I'll sharpen it right up.
On to the beast, the BK20 Bundok Bowie. This thing is even more impressive in person. I'd put it right up there with the Junglas, except the profile is a bit meaner, a bit more classic Bowie (I'll post side by side pictures later). It feels great in the hand, and feels like it just wants to do work. I can't wait to get out and have a go with the Bundok and Junglas. I'll also probably be getting new handles for this, though not due to any F&F issues. I also may want to sharpen the swedge on the top. Just to give it that extra something. Not sure if I will, but I'm considering it. I'm not much for batoning, so that's not a concern. And this screams for a nice Kydex sheath.
All in all, I am incredibly happy with my purchase and am glad these are my first Beckers, as they are fantastic ambassadors for Becker. I can definitely see that I was missing out on not owning any of Mr. Becker's designs, but no longer. This will almost certainly lead to more, but for now I'm going to be tricking these three out to make them mine.
