We had our Cub Scout campout this weekend. I am happy to report there were no injuries to scouts (or knives). We had a great time. Here are just few photos of some of the knives we used. I also showed them how to make a wooden mallet. I used an axe and Mora knife to shape the tenon. I used a brace and bit to drill the hole in the head of the mallet.

Very nice, Curtis! Did the scouts have any strong preferences for any of the variety of knives available?

Good for you, Curtis!

What number is that Opinel? I didn't know if the locking ring was removed or it's a number 5.

A brace and bit, you went old school. I have one I still use when the need is there. I like the idea of teaching how to work with your hands and build from there.

Jackknife, that was a number 5. None of the boys chose the Opinel. At least they had some exposure to a variety of knives.

That's great Curtis!!! I always wanted to be a Scout but my Mom never signed me up...well let's not go there, it's a touchy issue:D

Thanks for this post, I love it:thumbup:

Great job Curtis!! The kids will remember that for the rest of their lives. Thanks for sharing.

Good stuff  Thirty years ago, I was a youth-worker and used to take groups of city kids camping. I still occasionally bump into some of them, and they still remember those trips :)

10 years as an Assistant Scoutmaster/Committee Chair here. Our son started from the beginning in Tiger Cubs and is now an Eagle Scout. So many great memories. Hats off to you for stepping up and volunteering to teach those boys things that they will use the rest of their lives.

Yeah, me too. I was a farm/country kid. My dad said something to the effect of "if you want to go play in the woods you can do it just as easy without being a boy scout." I still feel like I missed something.

That mallet is pretty cool. I've thought about picking up a brace with bits several times, just to have around, but I've never went ahead and done it.
