What is a recommended procedure for getting a toothy edge. The mechanics and sharpening tools used.

That's a deep question but at the most basic level, considering just general sharpening and not reprofiling or repairing...

Course stone (defined by the steel, stone, state of the blade, etc.) and grind one side until there is a burr. Flip and do the same on the other side. Light de-burring strokes. That means different things to different people but I generally prefer edge trailing.

Depending on the knife, I'm probably at a ~400 grit Norton India or a 300 grit Ultra Sharp diamond. I might go to a soft Arkansas or 600 grit diamond for honing but that's sort of mood dependent.

Very light, edge trailing strop strokes. The strop and compound again defined by the steel.

That's super basic, and as said in the other thread, the MT&E sub-forum has great stickies and search info.

DMT Extra Coarse 220 grit followed by a few light strokes on a DMT ultra fine 1200 grit renders a toothy edge with 'bite'.

I use a DMT "coarse" and then smooth the edge a little with either a ceramic rod or an Arkansas stone.

Works good on my high carbon blades.

Doesn't the 1200 grit remove or diminish the toothy edge of the 220 grit? If not, what does the 1200 do to the 220? Thanks...
