I was at a big box store, and heard on the overhead that if you attended a demonstration, you would get a free knife. What could I lose, I went and watched. They were those knives that are supposed to stay sharp forever. They cut into a hammer, show you the shavings, and then slice a tomato.

The knife is from a company "Forever Sharp". Made in China, which folks I just don't do China. I didn't buy the kitchen set, and got the paring knife free.

I figured that it's free, I'll abuse the living heck out of it. I've cut with this knife, horrible torture, that I wouln't do with a nice knife. I cut pvc pipe, dug holes in the yard, carpet, cardboard, small branches, scraped superglue, and still the knife had an edge. I've not sharped it since I got it.

I'm starting to want to get the kitchen set. Yes, I'd rather the Becker or Victorinox set, but I can't afford them and this knife has really proved it's worth.

I did make a "homemade" sheath for it, so I don't get stabbed.

Now for the pics!:

That's pretty awesome. And its awesome that it actually stayed sharp after all of that. And plus, a free knife is always great :)

Very interesting, especially since there is a really hot thread on here from earlier today discussing the strength and quality of Chinese steel.

Good post!

I actually watched the same demo about 5 years ago. Also for the free knife lol. After watching and nobody buying the guy ended up selling me two sets for 15 bucks. At the time I was a poor kid who had just got my own place and had very little for housewares. The serated bread knife style actually still works well, and is used a few times a week. I actually still have the paring knife too. I will say they were not mind blowing, but were better than I expected, and the filet that came with it is one I still use for panfish as it has a pile of flex and sharpens up easily in a short time.

I have the same exact one from the same exact knife demo. Unfortunately, my parents had a habit of cutting on ceramic plates, so I had to touch up the edge once in a while. It's been in the knife drawer for at least 5 or 6 years; not bad for $0.

Nice sheath! Sort of reminds me of the "Chang-Benza" if you care to search the archives.

My parents had a drawer full of those things. They have lasted a couple decades, and are always pulled out when tomatoes need slicing. Of course, I left a Shun Classic Santuko at the house for when I visit.

Saw the exact same demo at a Walmart awhile back. Never bought the knife set, but my dad, who was with me, snagged the very last free kife they were giving away. The best part? When we got home from Walmart, my dad suddeny remembered it was my mom's birthday but he had no present...except for the bag of Twizzlers he'd just bought for himself and this little kitchen knife he'd just gotten for free. So he gave both to my mom and saved himself a night of sleeping on the couch with the dog :D

Just dug it out of the cutlery drawer. It's a little rusty, but still going strong:
