A friend has about 30-40 new Victorinox SAKs of various models

A friend of mine owns a camping/outdoors/hiking shop nearby and has a LOT of inventory of all types. When I helped him change the location of his shop across town last year, I saw that some of his stuff is 10-20 years old!!!

He used to have a Victorinox display case in the old store, and now it's in storage. His Victorinox inventory is in a shoebox behind the counter, doing him absolutely no good.

I was wondering if he should try to maybe get rid of some of them on eBay or something. I also thought I might help him out by finding knife-afficionados who are looking for a hard-to-find older model. Does anyone here know if they would have value, if they are -- as I think they are -- at least 5-10 years old, maybe more?

I bought a Cadet from him the other day, after perusing his stock. He has Campers, Electricians, Handymans, a Soldier, even one with a Space Shuttle on the handle. (edited to add: also models called Prince, Princess, and at least three other diff. model names I can't recall.)

Since I don't know if Victorinox discontinues many models, I don't know if any of the ones he has are rare or in-demand, and if he should try to get more than simple retail price for any of them. These knives are all N.I.B. and have not suffered during storage, from what I could tell. Please offer advice and insights.

whats his email address? i might be able to take a few alox ones off his hands..

From the few models you listed, I dont think to many of them are all that rare, and probably worth just retail.

I do think the one with the shuttle on it may be a bit hard to find, I think that was a model they only made for a year (I could be wrong though).

Both forums (this one and Knifeforums) have a few people who seem to know alot about SAKs, so I would definately watch this thread for a few days and see what info they offer.

If he was in Mexico I would be interested in the Space Shuttle model, some people have shown interest in thin models with magnifyer.

I´ll check back just to see if Vincent has something to say.

Thanks Don -
but I think you guys over-estimate my knowledge on the SAK.

From the list of models given so far -
I think the only item that might be of collectors' value is the Space Shuttle model - however apparently some may still be available in Japan as I once posted - so the value might not be that high -
however putting that on eBay may bring in a reasonable price.

10-15 years sounds like a long time -
but for the Victorinox SAK it is not -
the last 2 feature changes were:
1991 - addition of multi-purpose hook (on the back of the scissors - some people may want models with scissors but withOUT the hook)
1995 - wire crimping tool in the pliers.

If he has some of the discontinued models -
like the Scientist or Yeoman or even older "Golfer" -
they may be desirable/in-demand but probably would not command any price higher than the original retail prices. So what I'm saying is that they will sell - but he probably would not be able to sell them at a "premium".

The best is to actually list the models and the numbers if possible,
so that people can see what is available -
there might be a highly desirable model in there, or a collector's item that has not yet been mentioned.

Well, I haven't mentioned to him that I would be checking around about the desirability of his stock, so I'll have to get back to his shop and tell him, and make a list of what he had. As I said, I forgot a lot of the model names that were present. I do now remember that there was one Scientist, as well.

Thanks for the info, guys.
