a buddy goes upstate to the "worlds biggest yard sale" told him to keep his eye out for old pocket knives-

he brought back a remington 1306 tracker(1990),its perfect and has a like new box-i paid 40 $ for it ,its a he did now i did type of deal-

I think what he is trying to say is, he set his buddy on the look out for interesting knives. His buddy bought one for $40, then he bought it off of his buddy for $40. Hence the "I paid 40 $ for it, its a he did now i did type of deal."
