this was pretty much what i did every 5 min - look behind my back to see if any sheeple was coming behind me! with a lite machete clearly strapped to my pack's left side and a junglas to the right of it, every time i saw a snow shoe'er caught up to us i pretended to be extra friendly and greet them...when in reality, i just wanted to turn my back away from them so they can't see my knives, get freaked out and call 911 :o

anyway, there's more pics here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=810539. i also had my esee-4 hanging from my neck/shoulder rig in one of the pics.

Hehe. I am not part of the sheeple croud, but I would have asked you why the hell you had 2 big ass knives strapped to your pack..

From a distance.....:p

maybe they just didnt give you a second look while you were watching. smart not to piss off a crazy man with a big knife..... lol

I lived in Albuquerque for 11 years, hiked, camped, shoeshoed in the Sandias so many times. Even though you could see ABQ from the crest, you could still die from hypothermia.
I know folks that jog the 28 mile crest trail, with no gear. That mountain saw lots of visitors. Some were bow hunters, some tourists, cross country skiers, hikers, joggers.
I would have to be miles from the roads before I saw the backpackers, and others that didn't seem scared from my big ass knife.
It's just the stigma of weaponry that knives have in our society. Like Pitbulls, people just imagine the worst. It's a shame.

...and I would have politely told you to mind your own damn business and have a nice day with a big polite smile. :D

Well thats not nice. But I understand, I would be grouchy too if I lived in Misery, I mean Missouri..:p

Nothing grouchy about it really. I just don't like people feeling it is their place to question why I do something just because they don't, especially when it has a tone that I'm somehow strange or in the wrong. The machete and the large fixed blade play just as much of a role in the outdoors as an axe. No different than being at the range and some doober looking at one of my ARs and going "What do you need that fer?"

Now if JV3 was in the city park being lapped by joggers and old ladies on Rascal Scooters, he might seem a bit out of place.

Oh boy. There is the problem with typing. I thought the smileys I put in my post would show I was kidding, but I guess not...

Instead of explaining to me about the role of a machete and large knife play in the wilderness, you should try educating the ones who would question their role.

After all, I am the same guy who takes this to an overnighter..

Adaman, before jumping down my throat, you should be aware that a large portion of my posts are sarcastic. Look at the smileys.

Now back to our regular scheduled program....

Not that most folks on this site need defending, but I agree with Adam....and Missouri isn't such a bad place...spent about a year living there in Birchtree on a ranch when I was 19/20.

I thought we brought alot of steel. Good lookin' out Tony, I'll have to up my count next time.:D

Yeah, and you two knuckleheads need to come hang with Riley and I!

Up for a day hike most weekends. Need to get a better idea of who is around here and when we all could meet up. Though it will be good whenever.

looks good buddy!!!!!

thanks, man!

i would've answered with "what else would i use to baton...err, cut my bagel in half and spread grey poupon on, good sir?" :p

Removed to keep from shitting on JV3's thread.

no biggie, man. i welcome input from everyone here. with that said, ny/nj area is a whole other breed of sheeple country. it's one of the few states that still have the awb in place. when i feel like playing with my ar-15s, i just get the heck outta here and go to a pa range 60 mi away. the range employees here are notorious for calling in a state police to check out an ar-15 just to make sure everything is legal  even my insanely short and obviously only a 10 round magazine gets a good minute or two of examination by the range staff almost every time i'm there.

on hindsight, i'll just use a much bigger pack so i can fit all my knives inside it and just mind my own business next time :o that trail is usually empty especially in the winter but i guess all that snow brought out the snowshoe'ers in droves and my sheeple radar was in over-drive.

ha, true. i do find that i'm comfortable using my knives when i'm near the hikers on the appalachian trail though. they're a lot more open-minded when it comes to knives than the hikers (or more like dog walkers really) on other trails. plus, i enjoy seeing the look of disgust on them when they see all that extra weight i'm carrying :D

that's why i tend to prefer hiking in the more steep terrain here. it kinda weeds out the dog walkers (let's face it these people aren't really hikers, they just live nearby and have a convenient place to let their dogs poop and not have to clean after them ).

great pics!

when i get too old to walk, i'm gonna strap some blades to my scooter.

heck yeah! maybe i should buy an atv so i can carry even more knives...and guns...hmmm.

holy! were you courting some native and brought gifts for her dad or something? that'll get you a ton of wives in south america

Alright, from the looks of Tonym's photo, we definitely didn't bring enough knives.

I thought we brought alot of steel. Good lookin' out Tony, I'll have to up my count next time.:D

i now feel less like a man than you and tony :p

definitely. we hiked/camp with riley and harry last fall. riley sure likes his whiskey  they almost convinced me to stay overnight with them...but all that spooning talk for warmth when it was in the '70s scared the crap outta me! :D

Best attempt? I wasn't even trying lol.

Whiskey is good, the whole spooning thing for first timers was somewhat of a turn off. The second time maybe, but I'm just not a first time kind of guy.
