A funny (memorable) knife buying experience...

You folks seem to like a good knife-related story as much as I do... :)

Years ago, I was buying my first quality knife. I shopped around a lot and then found something real solid, a Benchmade 720 with an aluminum handle. Because of the all Al handle, it has some heft (4.3 oz). I was in the store with a good friend. My friend loved to use only hand/wrist action to sweep the blade open, without touching the blade, thumbstud, etc. It made him feel "cool", I guess  He was flicking the knife open with his right hand, when the knife salesman was describing the excellent, fully-ambidextrous qualities of the AXIS lock. My friend tried sweeping the blade open without pulling the AXIS lock or touching the thumbstud using his left hand. Being his off-hand, he was less secure with it. At the time, I was looking into one of the display cases. My friend made a huge arm motion to fling the blade out and lost hold of the knife. The knife flew into the front of a glass display case and smashed the ~5 foot wide glass in the front of the case. The knife then dropped right in front of my feet. I looked up in shock, at my friend, who's face turned the deepest shade of red I have ever seen in someone's face! He was speachless. There was a slight indent on the end of the knife where it hit the glass case. I bought the knife and I still like reminding my friend of that experience :)

Any other funny knife-buying experiences out there? Let's hear 'em.

You can see the small dent on the end of the knife, on the left side in this picture.

I was looking at Kitchen knife sets about a year ago with my now EX and I picked up one of the boxes........ Huge mistake because one of the blades was sticking though the box and I sliced the crap out of my hand. Blood went everyplace and the EX was freaking out screaming for some help. When the guy came over I asked him for a towel quietly. He gave me one and I explained to him what happened showing him the box. The manager came over and almost passed out from the blood.

It really wasn't that bad once I got the blood soaked up and looked at it.

Ankerson, ouch! My buddy handed me a new knife he just bought (Maddog) and then walked into the other room. I went straight to the refigerator and poured ketchup all over one of my hands. When he came back into the kitchen and saw the red-stuff all over my hand, his jaw dropped and his face went white. He figured it out quickly when I couldn't stop laughing :)

Good story, thanks for sharing. Who paid to replace the glass?
Shoot, I was hoping that question wouldn't come up...
The store owner was super-nice. He just said to my friend "I need to get that replaced, how can you help me?". My friend said "I'll get a pane of glass and come back tomorrow and do the work". I bought my knife and looked around a bit more. As I was on the other side of the store, I heard my friend giving the guy a fake name. The store owner even offered to give my friend a (cheap) knife if he replaced the glass in the case. When we walked to the car, I asked my friend if he would really come back to replace the glass he broke. He said "Yeah, I will try to". I asked about it a couple days later. Of course, he never went back to fix the glass case. I told my friend that I thought it was not very cool of him. I lost some respect for my friend because of that :(

That sucks, I think Id have to come and pay for it if it were myself :(

As the manager of a stereo shop many years ago I worked Sundays by myself. There had been a recent rash of robberies in town by someone using what was described as a Buck knife. A rough looking character came through the door and as he walked across to where I was he pulled out and opened a folding hunter. As he neared he said, "Would you buy my knife? I need money to eat!". He walked out with a $5.00 bill and a grin on his face and I still own that 110!

I like that. You're good people. :D

Well, there was the hot salesgirl when I purchased my my S&W neck knife at the time. . . :D

Also, most of the time I end up showing or teaching the sales staff about the knife, the brand, the steel/material, design, history, etc. Apparently there are some customers out there (us knife knuts that is) who know a lot more about the merchandise than they do.

Ha, I had the same thing happen to me at Bass Pro Shops about 6 or so months ago, I was fondling a BM 960 and a BM 940 and the salesman started asking me all sorts of questions about the differences between the two (steel and such) me and my buddy thought it was pretty funny. I was more than happy to help educate him though. :D

It's not a funny story but a few months ago my wife decided she wanted a good knife after keeping the same $25 gerber for about 6 years. I admitted she'd proven worthy of a good knife and after looking at a few knives at the big chain sporting goods stores, she decided on a spyderco delica. The problem was the black FRN version was not available anywhere locally.
I even had one salesperson fail to see the difference between the FRN and stainless handled versions. Eventually we found one at a place called NATS sporting goods in Bowling Green Ky. and those store employees where knife nuts. We eventually had all three employees over the glass case talking knives and they let my wife and I handle just about every knife there.
I knew I could get it $15 cheaper online but felt good about giving them the business.

More than 30 years ago, a friend of mine wanted a Buck 110 for Christmas. He told his mother that he wanted a Buck knife for Christmas and she went to the hardware store and asked for those knives that cost a buck. Needles to say he was a bait disappointed, but I bet that buck knife is a prized possesion today!!

That's awful. It's behavior like that which make me lose faith in humanity :( I've actually severed ties with friends for less...
