I have one of this:

Do other owners sharpen or tune the clipper for better performance? I have recently noticed a decline of cutting power and its either the tool is losing the right leverage or the edges are not sharp enough.

Any thoughts?

TIA.

I've had a similar clipper for several years. It looks the same but it's not an AG Russell. I've never sharpened mine even though my wife found it and uses it now (she can break an anvil).

Well I bought one, around $40 Canadian and it looks and feels beautiful.
Very well made and sharp.

Would it work? ....No.

It was not nearly as good as my old cigar store purchase of the conventional type.

It refused to cut a thumb nail unless the nail was soft, as just out of the shower. And it left a rough surface on every cut. And it was awkward to use
requiring allot of pressure and the narrow lever digs into the skin.
All in all a POS.

AG Russel stuff seems high priced and this is no exception.

Yes, that is the same experience that I have. I was wondering if it was worth tuning it to attain the performance of a regular clipper. But somehow, it looks like it would be best to just get a regular clipper instead.

Hmm, AG gave me one as a gift about 2 years ago and I like it alot. I'm not just saying that cause he gave it to me, if I didnt like it I wouldnt have posted anything.
I wonder if the differences are inconsistent sharpness from the factory?

Mine works very well, but I did sharpen it with a 204 Sharpmaker. You might want to try that, the intructions for sharpening clippers are in the book and reviewed on the video.

I have two pair of the clippers from A. G. Russell and have found them to work exceptionally well. Everytime I loan them out I get comments on how well they cut! I usually have a pair in my pocket or backpack. The great thing about buying from A.G. is that he stands behind EVERYTHING he sells with a 100% money back gaurantee. I think your clippers may be defective if they are not cutting good, send them back for another pair or if you really don't like them ask for a refund.

I have a similar model made by Dovo that was extra cool because it came with a leather sheath. The edges meet perfectly, it came sharp as hell, it traps the cut nail, and is flat in my pocket. Couldn't be beat for 25 bucks.

I picked up my Dovo's 4 years ago after a coworker puller out a set in a meeting. Seeing that cool leather sheath and the "fold flat" cool factor I had to have a set. I've used regularly for 4 years as my EDC clippers and they are still sharp as new.
I also picked up a set of the Brookstone stainless one referenced above and they are fantastic as well. Find myself using them for toe nails and major finger work if I have let them grwo for a while. Can't go wrong with either pair, they both cut VERY well.

There's a Seki nail clipper, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.
Near my house there's a Japanese tool shop that sells them for $10.

I picked up an identical version at my local cutlery shop for about half the price. It was imported from Italy. I think it is the one AG buys and resells, but I could be wrong.

They work fine at straight clipping, but the radius on the cut is not as generous as on the conventional drugstore (Revlon) types.

The file is much, much better than the conventional types and the "pick" has a much better shape and I find it more useful that those stamped picks on the conventional ones.

Very easy to carry in the pocket un-notices due to the overall design.
