I'm looking at an A.G. Russell Airweights (I'm intrigued by the lack of steel supports in the handle), are they any good??? They're supposed to be strong, but are they? Also, does anyone have any experience with their Chinese Burl handled knives?

A.G. was the first one to use linerless micarta for knife handles.
Problem was when he started he didn't have the money to patent
the idea. So now linerless micarta "airweights" are fairly common.
Both of my Spyderco Large Calypso's are micarta slab handles
and I find them to be OK for everyday uses. There are others I'm
sure.

If you want to try anything A.G. sells just remember his warranty policy.
"You decide how long it's supposed to make you happy. If it fails to do
that send it back" Period. I've bought several knives from A.G. both his
brand as well as others and have yet to be disappointed. Those that had
any quality issues were promptly taken care of no questions asked.
I find A.G. Russell to be a first class act and is worthy of your and
my business. He isn't the cheapest but then premium quality seldom is.

Those knives look to be strong..although if strength is your main concern of course you know there's a ton of other knives to choose from.

Tightwad made a good point, you can beat AG's prices anywhere but he offers quite a few exclusives not available anywhere else and his service is second to none(tied with a few though).

I have to agree with TW and Stompy. Over the years (and it has been a few) I have yet to be anything but pleased with items from the A.G. Russell catalogs either the regular versions or exclusive items. I have never seen anything close to what could be considered "junk" that was sold by his company.

I know of no other knife person who has done so much for the industry (factory or handmade). As one of the oldest, if not the oldest mail order knife dealers in the U.S. they are obviously doing things right.

I checked em out once because another forumite was asking about them.
Very good fit and finish. Don't worry about the linerless micarta scales. They will stand up to everyday use,as long as your not prying, chopping,or hammering with it. Dont recall the steel off hand, but it is most likely ats-34 or aus-8. If you like they way it looks,go for it. You wont be disappointed.
