I was recently looking for a good, somewhat small slipjoint. I seemed to remember a review being placed on here concerning this particular knife, but I can't seem to find it. Anyone who's got one, please share. Particularly, I'd be interested in the insights of Buzzbait on this, mostly because he has one, and by now would have had it for a while. Opinions? I know that things bought from A. G. come with a quality warantee, and that he sells quality, but I'm interested in how this has held up over time/use. Thanks!

SpyderJon,

The review I think was over on knifeforums.

I picked up two several months ago, one for me and one for my son. Both were flawless as far as I could tell, although they were marked as seconds. A.G.'s seconds are first-rate by any standard, though :)

After having used the knife for a few months, I can say it is as solid a slipjoint as any that I have, including Buck, Camillus, Queen, and Schatt & Morgan. The construction is first-rate, and the blade steel of high quality Japanese origin.

The large main blade (8A HC) is great for everyday EDC work, and is easy to sharpen. It doesn't seem to get dull very easily, either, although a few swipes on a ceramic rod and it's back to shaving sharp. The two smaller, identical pen blades are perfect when the urge to whittle hits you.

The only issue I heard was that someone had the bone coloring bleed a bit, but I haven't seen that on the two I bought.

Get one, it's a steal for $39.95 :)

Thanks for the info! Say, is the color bleeding thing a common occurance in traditionals? I've not had any stag or bone handled knives before, and I'd never heard of the color bleeding on them, either. That is very interesting to know! Do you know if the warantee would cover something such as this?

My Cattaraugus is sensational. I'd say that has the best fit and finish of any of my slipjoints. It has also held up beautifully over the last few months. I can't say a bad thing about it, which is quite a compliment. I can usually find at least something small that bothers me about any knife, but the Cattaraugus is darned near perfect in every way. I bought one for myself, and later purchased one for my father-in-law. We are now both diehard A.G fans. Get one before A.G. stops selling them. The entire world should own one of these as a benchmark of how good a production slipjoint can really be.

I purchased one also, based on Buzzbait's review. It is very, very nice. Probably the best "feeling" knife I own. A.G.'s seconds are better than most firsts if the Cattaraugus is any indication. Buy one before they're gone!

Thanks for all the encouraging information! I certainly am going to try and procure one of these gems before they all come up missing! Now, if I can only find the visa....:D

Oh, and Thanks to all, but especially Buzzbait, I was hoping that you'd have encouraging information for me! Thanks to all, and feel free to comment on the "bleeding" thing. I've seriously never heard of color bleeding from natural handle materials and I'm very interested in this!

I've had a Marbles mini-caper with the red bone handles that bled for quite awhile after rubbing it an washing it with soap and water many times it has more or less quite.

I have a A.G. Russell Cattaragus whittler too, No bleeding but hte one I got has a main blade that is two tight and grinds when it is opened. I expect that it will break in as well.

I just received one of the Cattaraugus seconds from A.G. today. It is truly awesome. The bone handles are beautiful and the knife fits great in jeans pockets with it's rounded bolsters. I also ordered an ATS-34 "Seconds" lockback folder with a 3" blade and burl wood handles. It is also very nice. Thanks for the recommendation Buzz!

you have really made a good choice I live about 90 miles from the a.g.russell factory and have been there my self and I can tell you for certian thot they make a quality blade.

Another happy Cattaraugus Whittler owner. I just got mine. It is very well put together. I love the bone on this knife. Beautiful.
