I remember first seeing this knife design many years ago, as a kid or teenager if memory serves. Originally, as mentioned in another thread here that I ran across, it was used as an advertising give away or was sold for a dollar or two. I just bought the current iteration and note that it seems to be much better construction than the original knives. At the current price it should be!

It is a unique design where the U shape scales rotate to enclose the blade when closing it and then the blade and scales assembly pivots to the side to fit into a open rectasngular frame. All steel construction and in the closed position it does not look like a knife, at least to me. Photo available on the Russell web site.

All in all a interesting small utility knife design which looks to me to be quite safe as a pocket knife. Too slow opening to be anything other than a utility knife design though. Any members have an idea of the original name for this knife design, if there was one?

I can't answer your question, but when I looked it up, the first thing it reminded me of was a flash drive (oversized). Pretty interesting design. I wonder if it locks up in any way

The hand gripping the handle prevents the scales rotating vertically though the basic design is such that any torque on the blade, vertical or sideways, is not transmitted to the knife mechanism in such a way as to try and close the knife unless something breaks. It is a very thin design too at about 5.5mm thick even though the blade thickness is about 3mm. The blade is hollow ground.
