I had a great time.
I arrived early Friday morning and went to the Hotel to try and check in, as I was walking out I did a double take and who was sitting on a bench out front but "The Gunny" - R. Lee Ermey. Gave him a Semper Fi and sat down, we talked for about 45 minutes. Mostly about his Ranch, fishing, we talked about his upcoming line that SOG is doing for him - the Gunny Approved line. Then we got off on to places we both had been stationed (Okinawa, the P.I.). etc. Really good time.
Friday's VIP attendance (to me) seemed to be down from last year. There were also several empty tables of Makers that had not shown up.
However, some Makers did good business Friday. By Saturday makers like Mike Malosh, Bill Ruple and Rusty Preston sold out. Dozier had sold most of his fixed but had several Folders left on Saturday as well as some of his higher end line. Jody Muller had one left (brought three) on Saturday. D'Holder brought plenty of gorgeous knives, someday!! I think Tad Lynch only had three left on Saturday. Lots of great knives were still around when I left near the end of show on Saturday.
I was able to take my time and chat for a while with several good Makers, can't recall them all now. Folks like John Howser from KY who makes really nice Slipjoints and his friend Mr. Baker (forgot his first name) who made exceptional small fixed blade hunting knives. Chatted with Ben Midgley and his son who also make very nice Slipjoints.
Had dinner at Bone Fish Grill again this year with Chad Nichols (Stainless Damascus Guru), Jared Price (our very own jprice76) who continues to push his talent forward, Aldo Bruno (the New Jersey Steel Baron), Steve Kelly who is a great Maker and very knowledgable about steel and applications and Allen Newberry (above) who had some great looking pocket fixed blades with a Persian flare. We had a great time.
The CKCA had their Drawing for the Benefit knife at the Show and raised almost $16,000 (that's sixteen thousand) for that special knife created by CKCA members Edmund Davidson, Barry Lee Hands, Steve Johnson and Wolfgang Loerchner and Paul Long sheathmaker. All proceeds went to Lung Cancer research. Amazing gesture.
Even though the trip was shorter for me I still had a great time. Anyone else that went chime in and let us know what you got, what you thought, friends you saw, etc.
