A while ago I was browsing the A.G. Russell site and I came across the beefiest folder I'd seen in a very long time. Being a fan of beefy folders, I ordered it without ever having seen it live, let alone handled it. I don't do that very often.
It arrived today, and I was very pleasantly surprised.
Some specs:
weight: 10oz (280 grams)
Blade thickness 6mm (.233"... thickest I've ever seen, only the ER RAO matches it) full flat ground
Blade length 84mm (5 5/16")
Blade steel 8Cr13MoV
Handle material Rucarta (looks identical to micarta)
Locktype: backlock

The knife is made in China. I have not seen many folders with such excellent F&F, it really is outstanding. I have not discovered a single flaw.
It does not have a clip, I plan to have one made for it. The knife is very smooth, no traction at all, so despite its weight it should carry FRP no problems.
It also has no thumbstud, hole or flipper, but it has a traditional thumbnail split on the blade, widened and deepend so it works just fine to open it one-handed. It's ambidextrous as well.
It's not a knife I'm gonna carry a lot, but it's a very welcome addition. Oh and it came razor sharp. Good job A.G. Russell!

Very nice. I'm a big fan of the traditional looks of AG Russel's Texas Ranger knives.

Looks like a beast allright. A pocketclip would fit this one very well I think.

That is such a good looking knife and I would be all over it except for that shield inlay on the handle.

I have admired all the AG Russel Texas Ranger models thus far but that inlay looks terrible and cheesy in my opinion. Otherwise they ,look like top notch , quality knives.

This is my first AGR, but I'm impressed. I'm not sure what you think is cheesy, the design of the inlay or the execution? I won't argue taste with you because that's personal, but it's very well made.

Lets just say I would own one if they made a version that was plain without the shield or blade markings.

It is a good looking knife.

for some reason, and it may just be the scales, but it reminds me of the CS BR.

That is a good observation, the combination of smooth dark micarta scales and mirror polished bolsters is very similar.

I got the 2009 HUGE folding hunter, and love it. It's my new picnic watermelon knife. I ended up using a Benchmade Balisong sheath to carry the beast, and it works very well.

I also have A. G.'s hawkbill made-in-China knife. These are excellent quality knives for great prices!

I got to handle the 2010 TR knife, and it just felt too big for any practical carry. That doesn't mean I won't get one, though.:D It's an awesome piece, and a great way to introduce folks to quality blades. I can't wait to see their expressions!

Thanks for the great pics, philwar.

It looks... different. I have no use for beefy folders, but as long as you like it, enjoy using it!
