First, I would like to thank A.G. Russell and Dave H. for the opportunity to participate in this pass around/lottery.

DETAILS – This Japanese made slip joint pen knife features a VG-10 modified warncliff blade and titanium handles. Additional details can be seen on A.G. Russell’s site -

OUT OF THE BOX - This knife is tiny! It is also very thin (0.14”) and light (0.20 oz). The blade walks and talks nicely with a pause and an audible click when the blade approaches the half open position. I found no flaws with the pen knife’s fit or finish except for a very small gap between the back spacer and one of the scales just behind the blade pivot area. The blade came to me shaving sharp.

BLADE - The 1 ½” modified warncliff (I call it modified because the blade edge dose have a bit of curve to it, while a true warncliff is straight edged) style blade is evenly ground to a full flat grind profile. The spine is 0.041” thick at the base of the blade and tapers to 0.016” at the tip. The edge is about 0.010” thick behind the bevel, which is about 0.036” wide for an edge angle of about 13 degrees per side.

STEEL – The blade steel is VG-10 at a nominal of 59-61 HRC. VG-10 is fairly stain resistant and holds an edge quite well. VG-10 is also very fine grained and will take a very keen edge.

HANDLE – The scales consist of two plain polished 0.030” thick titanium slabs. The scales are held together (with a 0.040” thick stainless back spring between them) by three fasteners with rivet heads on one side and small Phillips heads on the other.

Titanium is light, but tends to show scratches and the pass around Ultimate Pen is showing a number of these.

The handle is too small for heavy work, but it dose afford a usable hold for the light cutting chores that this knife is intended for.

CUTTING - I used the Ultimate Pen Knife for cutting open envelopes and parcels, sharpening pencils, cutting string and even breaking down light card board boxes. The Pen Knife handled all of this with surprising ease despite its diminutive size. The thin flat ground blade really cuts well.

CARRYING - Often knives are limited in their carry options because they are too big. The Ultimate Pen Knife has the opposite problem – it’s too small! So, small in fact that I think I would lose it if I carried loose in my pocket. I tried carrying it in my wallet and even there it disappeared into the little credit card pockets. Although I didn’t try it, a small change pouch might be a viable carry option.

I could see a lot of people keeping the Ultimate Pen Knife in their desk at work for use where only a completely harmless looking knife may be appropriate.

What the Ultimate Pen Knife really needs is a hole for a slit ring to attach to a key ring or a snap hook which would allow it to be used as a zipper pull.

CUT TO THE CHASE – The Ultimate Pen Knife is a well made with a high novelty factor thanks to its small size. And the thin flat ground VG-10 blade makes it a practical light duty knife that will hold an edge.

The Ultimate Pen Knife would be far more practical to carry if it had a hole for attaching a split ring or a snap-hook.

Nice little (very little) knife! The only problem that I have seen with mine is that the action is slightly gritty after repeated cycling. After thinning out the edge, it became a very slick cutter.

Well, mine has seen mostly wallet (Taxi wallet) carry since it's size makes it easy to loose. I have also just carried it in my watch pocket but have almost forgotten it in a load of laundry! It also works well for shirt pocket carry.
