I had mentioned some models and a couple of folks asked for pics, so I thought I would start posting some. I've been trying to reorganize my collection by type, so sorted thru and pulled all the Ganga Rams and BGRS's out and took the opportunity to take this group pic. I just wish my pics were half as good as Gators or Fergusons, but also didn't want to post a dozen close ups either as I don't have much space left!
I hope to copy Steve's methods and try and get the Villager handles prettied up. The edges on the Villagers are the best of course, being razor sharp, although the two special handle ones in the top middle facing each other were well sharpened, despite being given the standard polishing.
Here they are from left to right:
1) 21" 41 oz. GRS - Horn - Bura
2) 18" 31 oz. BGRS - Horn - Bura
3) 18" 28 oz. Villager BGRS - Rough Horn - Bura
4) 17" 26 oz. BGRS - Carved Horn - Bura
5) 16.5" 24 oz. BGRS - Silver mtd. Horn - Bura
6) 17.25" 27 oz. BGRS - Red Chandan - Bura
7) 15" 20 oz. Villager BGRS - Rough saatisal wood - Sher
8) 15" 20 oz. Villager BGRS - Rough horn - Sher
9) 17.25" 27 oz. BGRS - Polished antler - Bura
10) 18" 28 oz. BGRS - Silver mtd. Bone - Bura
11) 17" 27 oz. Villager BGRS - Rough saatisal wood - Bura
12) 17" 28 oz. BGRS - Saatisal wood - Bura
13) 22.5" 42 oz. GRS - Saatisal wood - Bura
Only thing missing is a Chiruwa model (which for the sake of my bank acct. I thankfully missed!), after seeing a 16"er in that config for the first time the other day.
What would really have mode a couple of these models prettier, if not more functional, is a standard bolster and a brass inlay like on the sirupati or YCS into the sword of shiva, instead of just the plain outline. It would be neat if one of those were ever offered. Not sure why some of the models always come with the standard bolster while most of the rest do not. Still I guess it's just a visual thing, as the habaki bolster is well done on these knives by Bura and I suppose is more secure on the blade. Once you have seen the traditional ones though...
Except for AK's, I have more of this model than any other khuk. I think they (the babies anyway) offer the best combination of cutting power, strength, longer handle length and portability of just about any model. Anything 17 1/4" or less will also fit my Knifeware sheaths that I mentioned here previously, and at about 26-27 oz. on average are not too heavy to carry all day if necessary.
As I sort thru stuff in the next few weeks I'll try to post some more pics of other model groupings as I go.
Thanks,
Norm
