Just put these on my Zune as audiobooks.

Anybody read 'em?

(no spoilers, please!)

:D

Haven't read Elantris but Game of Thrones is a great book one of my favorites. HBO is making into a series and should be out sometime in 2011. The author has not finished the series and takes 5+ years to finish each one so I have been waiting for book 5 for quite awhile now.

Game of Thrones is one of the best fantasy type books Ive read. It isnt focused on magic and elves and crap like that. I dont expect any TV series to do it justice.

About the Game of Thrones saga, nothing to add. Also waiting for the last volume.

Which one should I read first? They're both pretty long....and now that I'm finished with classes...I have *plenty* of time in the shop to do some *reading*. :D

I liked Game of Thrones but I broke a cardinal rule of mine when I started that series, that is NEVER start a series before it is complete. I should have learned that lesson with Tad Williams and the "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" series. I had to wait 4 years for the last book... and then it turned out to be a two parter and I had to wait an extra year for the last installment.

Not learning from my mistake I then started in on Jordan's Wheel of Time series. Which

1) Turned out to be a total cash cow for the author which he was milking for all it was worth with a year or two between installments.

2) He let the series run on too long, it could have ended in about Book Six and been epic instead of pathetic.

3) He died before he completed it.

I would have thought that would have taught me. Nope, started on these Books by Martin, and as the previous poster say he takes about 5 years between books. Chances are he won't make it to the end of his series either. I haven't read the last one. I'm not reading any more until the series is finished.

Sorry, rant mode off... :)

I totally understand what you mean!

That's why I had previously avoided the Wheel of Time series....:(

But apparently the guy continuing the series was pretty good...is that right?

I may start it afterall in a few....

I've got around 80 audiobooks on my Zune right now that *need readin* first....LOL

I have heard that whoever finished off the Wheel of Time (is finishing off?) is actually pretty good, but honestly after Winter's Heart (I think that was book 6000 or so) I just couldn't go on. I doubt I'll ever pick the series back up. To be fair I don't read much fiction anymore.

the george rr martin books song of ice and fire is one of the best series of books ive read. it starts with game of thrones wich is an awesome book, enjoy and im sure youl read the others in the series, storm of sowrd , clash of kings , and feast for crows. the fifth is still to come. cant wait for the hbo series

Game of thrones is a great series. You will love it, if you like the fantasy books. Can't wait for the next book to come out.

I think I still need to read Feast For Crows.

I've read all of the Song of Ice and Fire books, and all of the Wheel of Time books as well. The new author, Brandon Sanderson, is doing a very credible job on the books. His style is quite a bit more concise than the late Mr. Jordan's. I am under the understanding that he should be done after writing3 more books, counting from Mr. Jordan's last book.

But I digress, you'll really dig George RR Martin's series. You may find yourself with the urge to make a sword up off his descriptions... Very gritty, lots of well-developed characters that evolve and change and grow, with enough of the fantastic to qualify as fantasy. They are books for those of us who grew up reading CS Lewis and Tolkien, and now want the next level of fantasy.

First I haven't red these books yet but visited quite a lot of fora to find out witch books to read.

The main conclusion is that George RR Martin is the best writer in this genre.
Most who have red these find the books of Raymond E Feist, Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind (?), Katharine Kerr (?) inferior.
Maybe if you want to do a lot of reading, better to start to read the other ones first?

Robin Hobb also seems very good

I enjoyed reading C.S. Friedman and James Clemens but lately I more into scifi.
I'm eagerly waiting on

"The City & The City" from China Miéville
"The Windup Girl " from Paolo Bacigalupi
"The Children of the Sky" from Vernor Vinge

Love the game of thrones series, but totally pissed he hasn't finished the last book yet (promised for the last 2 years) and splitting the same time line into two books sucked but I like the story line so
i 'll deal with it. the fat old bastsrd better finish em up before he croaks. wish he would lay off the football commentary on his site and just write the damn book too :)

Gearge R R Martin is the best fantasy writer since Tolkien IMO. The Wheel of Time series/Jordan was such a fiasco it was difficult for me to dive into the Song of Ice and Fire but I'm so glad that I did! GRRM has said that he has large portions of the next 3 books written already--which will finish out the series. He has re-written Dance of Dragons multiple times due to there being a time line problem that he's been struggling with. It was recently (in 2010) that he posted on his blog that he'd finally figured it out.

The Game of Thrones was awesome, I remember reading at the end of the book that the book was going to be longer, but he cut it in half and was going to publish the rest in about a year or so. I read the book about three years ago, and I thought the series would have been finished from the author's note and the fact it was almost 12 years old.
It wasn't.
It isn't.
It sucks.

"Elantris" is by Brandon Sanderson, the author finishing the Wheel of Time series. He is a very good author and all his books have been entertaining so far. It's also a stand alone novel.

As far as "The Game of Thrones" is concerned I got about 1/3 of the way through and set it down and never picked it up again. I should probably give it another try.

Robin Hobbs "Assassin" series is great. I literally could not stop reading until I finished the first three books.

I forgot about that series, if you are into these kind of books then you would really like the Assassin series.

I loved the game of thrones at first but it seemed like the good guys could never win.You need a little triumph with your tragedy and it had to much tragedy and not enough triumph for me.

Thanks for the recommendation - I added Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice to my "to-read" list.

I am still reading Elantris.....but *almost* finished.
