I’ve always carried a slip joint. Well one of two anyways either an SAK or a Case Stockman in CV. Beyond these two I’ve never really had much exposure to traditional knives.

Recently a member sent me two slip joints for no other reason then his generosity. I liked them. They got me wondering what else this genre had to offer. The two that the member sent me were rough rider, they seemed to be of decent quality and cheap enough to try out some patterns (beyond my stockman I hadn’t had any exposure to traditional knives).

I decided that I wanted to do a little investigating into traditional knives, So I ordered a selection of different patterns to see what there was to see. I was able to get an example of most patterns for around $50.

I like these as well. There was one pattern in particular that I really liked. The canoe. I’m here hoping to learn a little more about this kind of knife. What was its original purpose. When did you start seeing them? Things like that.

Secondly can anyone recommend a canoe that is good value (I’m unemployed and cash is tight, for me those rough rider knives seem to be an fantastic way to get exposure to the knives without breaking the bank) and good quality.

Rough Riders are great as you said. And Canoes are my favorite pattern. I have about 20 of them. Mostly Case, but some Queen and a couple Rough Riders. Since money is tight, I understand I am on disability and my wife lost her job a month ago stick with Rough Rider. I would also recommend ebay. I have gotten some nice Roughs for less than $10, with shipping. When you can, pick some up. What I do is just buy what I like. I still get others. I ahve a Rough stockman coming. But most of the time I get canoes anymore. I was going to post a bunch of pictures, but I will post just a few that are my favorites.

If you want to see more, I love to post pictures. And I need to take some of some newer knives tomorrow.

If you like canoes, have you checked out butter beans or peanuts. I really like both. Here is a Rough Rider Stag peanut.

Sorry. I ended up posting a bunch anyways. Oh well. I can't help myself.

Thanks, there is something about the size and blades of the canoe that seems to work perfectly for me. If you got more pictures I’d love to see them

As far as the peanut’s well after reading so many great things about them here I made sure that I got 3 with my order. At 5 bucks a pop I figured there wasn’t a lot to go wrong. Though one of them that o got was a stag and the two slabs are horribly matched, I’m really not to bothered by that though.

You should've told me you liked the canoe pattern. I got one of these sitting around, as well as their large sodbuster.

I didn’t know I liked it until I got the mail today…;)
I got the stag one, thinking about trying out some of the other handle materials.

Thanks again BTW:thumbup:

No need for thanks. Those are users that weren't being put to use. If you want those Rough Riders, the offer still stands. After all, the gold membership costs a lot more than a couple RRs.

Here's some links if you wanna take a look at them.

Yes, that working knife is HUGE.

I just got one of those yellow handle canoes. As with the others, very nice knife and very sharp. Arm hair shaving sharp. Go for it.

I have one of the Queen canoes in 1095 which is superb. Collectorsknives still has em.

I was browsing through the Peanuts offered by rough rider and I noticed that they offer two with stag, but one is twice the price of the other. Any idea what the difference is?

There’s a practical point to the copperhead pattern. The bulge in the bolster encloses the sharp corner of the knife blade, where the spine approaches the pivot. There’s less wear and tear on your pocket with that right angle hidden by the bolster.

The canoe pattern is an ambidextrous copperhead.

I just ordered the yellow handled canoe for 9.99 shipped. I need to order another pattern any ideas. I hope they are a nice as everybody says. I am giving my god son a couple to go along with the SAK Farmer I gave him to use in the Boy Scouts.

you may look into hallmark cutlery(kissing crane and chief brands)> quality is on par with much more expensive brands and rate with the rough riders in pricing. kissing crane swayback jack has taken over my pocket recently for work carry kicking out my case and queen copperheads
