Hi all, I really need recommendations for a gift for my brother, hope you guys will help me out with it. Any input is apreciated!

My brother's birthday is comin' and I need to pick up an EDC for him. Luckily he's a knife-guy who loves to carry a folder as an office EDC for light duty chores, like say paper, enverlops, a lil bit of thread or cardboard, and ofcourse for food. Since he's working in an office, where averybody sees a knife as a weapon, he'd like to carry a somewhat low profile knife (deep carry pocket clip maybe?) with a 3-3.5 inches thin slicer blade. the budget is about 160ish, maybe I can push it a lil above that.

Was thinking about the caly 3.5 CF but I don't know if the knife will develop blade play overtime since it's a lockback.
the sage 2 is nice though, can someone give me an input about the lock lifespan, my brother've never got a Ti-framelock folder bfore, so if I can find something like the sage 2, he might be very happy.

Anyways, once again thanks in advance for your recommendations.

I think that the Caly 3.5 CF would be really cool! I have been thinking about getting one. I've been using a Spyderco Endura 4 (which has the lockback) for most of the summer. It has 0 blade play, it's probably the best lockup of any of my knives. I'm very impressed with the lock.

Whatever you decide, make sure it has a flipper so your brother will have the most advanced, efficient, and mechanically optimized system of deployment.

LOL flipper? and ofcourse it's gotta come with bearing pivot, and Ti-framelock, which is cool but I can't find any flipper like that at about 3-3.5inches for office @ about $160-200

I'm Considering the Spyderco Domino too, but seems like it's out-of-stock everywhere

yeah I'm surprised too that lockback design has zero blade play, and CF +ZDP189 would be real cool though

How about a Benchmade? Presidio and Griptilian fit your size and they are fairly low key as modern folders are concerned. A 710 would be classic, albeit a little bigger or a Sequel if you want to go smaller. All non threatening simple knives with one of the best and most fun locks. If he's a knife guy he will most likely get a kick out the AXIS.

Good luck with your search and keep us posted.

Check out spyderco's folders.. I'm sure they'll be one that appeals to you.. Great knives for the money.

Dominos are popping up as they hit the knife shops in mass shipments this week. Another option if you really did want all the whiz bang options would be the A.G. Russell Gentleman's Frame Lock. Has most of what you've described and unless the price has changed again you can get it for only $125.

If you like the Sage 2, though, Domino is probably the "ultimate" option in your price range. It's basically a slightly bigger Sage with a flipper (Sage 2 second from the top, Domino on the bottom):

Consider a Benchmade 940 if the Caly 3.5 is a strong contender. I own both and rarely carry the Caly 3.5 because the lock is a tad sticky. The 940 is one the most versatile, best carrying and "people friendly" knives on the market. It's also unique in that it doesn't look like yet another boilerplate black-on-satin "tactical" blade. The 940 also proudly sports a made in the "USA" stamp and boasts the best warranty service in the industry.

Call me a snob, but I'd never gift a non-American knife to someone on an important occasion.

If he works in an office you might want to consider a nice traditional, maybe something from GEC. If you really want a pocket clip and one handed opening then take a look at a case trapperlock. It has all the convenience of a modern knife but it still has the classic, non threatening appearance that keeps non knife people comfortable.

The sage 2 is a great office carry knife! I don't recall anyone mentioning that they wore out the lock-bar, so the lifespan of the knife should not be a concern. The caly3.5 might be a bit too large, maybe the 3 would be a better fit.
We'll see some dominos popping up on the exchange this week I'm sure, but you'll have to be quick to grab them.

Oakengroves I'm confused by your statement about non-American knives... Perhaps the OP should be looking at Vietnamese offerings only?

I like the Benchmade 943. It has a sharper point than the 940. The knife is light at 82gm. It is totally ambidextrous and features an AXIS lock.

First I want to thank you guys for all your help! I don't really mind if the knife is not made in US, since quality and price is what I really care for, and I also don't think my brother is a traditional folder guy really, but I am, somethimes ;)
And btw, I see the sage2 is not that much smaller than the Domino though, really the big difference in size is the handle length, and I can see the Sage's got better blade to handle ratio.

Well, I think I pinned it down, Sage 2 for my brother and Bradley Folder for me, (yes I know I'm a lil late for the M4 party)
We'll see how the RIL of the Sage hold up, thanks for the inputs guys, I'll let you know when I got the knives

Yep I loooooove that knife, I actually got it! but I rarely use it and I keep lubbing it alot since I's afraid I'm gonna break the omega spring on it ( having really hard time finding omega spring here where I live) :(

Benchmade would probably send you one free of charge if you asked.
And the omega spring is good and strong. I don't think you're going to break it anytime soon with normal EDC use.
