A Gift from my grandpa

I was over at my grandparents house for our typical Wednesday night supper and my grandpa randomly said " I heard you need a knife!" This was most likely in reference to a conversation I'm sure he overheard between my wife and grandma discussing potential bday/Xmas gifts for me. He goes to his room and brings me this white box and says it never been used, take it. I was blown away. It was an 8OT. I am very close with my grandparent and I know that my time with my grandpa is short. This knife will never leave me, that is until I pass it along to my son one day. Just thought I would share. Forgive the crappy pics. I'm completely ignorant to the history of old timers. I know there's many on the board that know a ton about them. I would greatly appreciate any info about this knife. Thanks!

Congratulations perchjerk. Schrade USA is one of my top two favorite knife makers!

If you go the Forum Directory here on Blade Forums and go to the end of the Manufacturer's Forum you'll see Collectors Forum. Click on that and you'll find a forum for Schrade Collectors. The Schrade Knife Collectors Forum is the largest deposit of USA Schrade information in the world! You'll find everything there is to know about your knife there. Have fun.

Nice he got to give it to you and you got to receive it while he's still here. And it's a great knife.
What's he carrying himself, or is he not a knife guy?

What a great story! Thanks for sharing it. I can see why you're excited. I especially like your second photo with the Old Timer tagline "A Knife Like Granddad's". In your case, it's not only LIKE Granddad's, it IS Granddad's! Enjoy that knife, and especially your time with your grandpa.

He is definitely a knife guy, just not an enthusiast like many of us. He carries a knife every day as a tool. It can be an OT, case, and all day everyday he has a Vic Classic in his pocket.

Nice.

I have a few of my grandpa's knives. A revolver from my other grandpa, and a few from my wife's grandpa and father.

I will have some nice old ones to pass on to my own boys.

I have also given knives to my father and wife's father so that my two boys can get knives from them as well when they are a bit older.

Nice, U.S.A. 8OT, NIB (new in box).

People are starting to ask too much for USA Schrades. I don't know if that will ever be "collectable" (maybe), but it's sure a nice knife.

Knives from grampa are the BEST! my grandfather got me started with a ww2 era pen knife and then a old timer 340t i think medium stockman. Unfortunatly sometime in my childhood the knife dissappeared from the worn brown box it lived in. Im still thankful i have the memories of him teaching me how to open and close the blades and i have others from him. Anyways congrats that is a treasure. My grandpa is still with me as well but like u said time is short and life is fast enjoy your time with him and i will to have a good holiday!

That is a great gift all the way around - from your Granddad's hands to yours and a USA made Schrade as well! The Schrade Old Timers were intended to be working knives and are as good as they come in that genre - terrific steel that takes an edge easily and holds it well. Congratulations! OH

Nice knife to get from your grandad :) I wish my grandad was still alive.

That's a great gift to get from your Grandpa. But the even better gift is those Wednesday night suppers! Love it!

That's an excellent knife. As you may have learned by now, the Imperial-Schrade Corp. went out of business in 2004 and since then all Old Timer knives have been contract-made in China for another company that bought the "OT" name during the bankruptcy auction.

Not only does your knife pre-date the 2004 bankruptcy, it's actually much older than that. It's difficult to narrow down an exact date, but using the packaging and tang stamp as rough guides, your knife was likely made in ca. 1980s.

The blades are 1095 carbon, which Schrade did an excellent job heat treating. Bolsters are nickel-silver, and the handles are "brown sawcut Delrin." The Delrin is practically unbreakable, but will fade and/or become chalky if left in the sun or exposed to heat.

My first pocketknife, about forty years ago now, was a 34-OT Old Timer given to me by my grandfather. Lost that original when I was ten years old, immediately bought an identical replacement, and I still have it today. It has the same packaging and tang stamp as yours.

Prices for Old Timer pocketknives, especially the uncommon models, have skyrocketed since the factory closed in 2004. Seems to have cooled a bit now as the collector demand has been fulfilled and the supply remains steady.

Congratulations on your new knife ! There's nothing more special than getting one from our fathers or grandfathers.

And don't forget to think about maybe getting a nice pocket knife for him when his next birthday rolls around - maybe something in carbon steel from GEC with a pocket sheath. Let him know they still make a few things right in America :)
