A Gift of Memories

Hi,

I was gifted this Schrade 825 Stockman from a fellow Forumite. All because I mentioned that I didn't own a good one. Well, I received it in the mail a couple of days ago. When I opened the envelope, a very powerful blast from the past hit me. It is very much like the last of the Schrades I owned as a teen.

When I held it for the first time and felt the Delrin scales, I could feel the hot summer sun beating down on me. And I could smell and feel the dust from the chaff of the oat straw. And I could see my Grandfather sitting half turned around on that old Massy-Harris 33 tractor opening his Copenhagen can. While I'm standing next to that piece of junk JD 24T baler. Trying to get the knoters untangled. My knife sitting on the tension bar, open and ready to cut away more of the tangled twine mess. It was an incredible moment. Even yet now, I can stare into those scales and see the sights, hear the sounds, and smell the smells of those now long ago days.

And while this old slippie won't be worked that hard, it will be used and cherished as a thoughtful Gift and as a touchstone to my past.

It's wonderful to find something that can stir the memories, like that Stockman has for you. What a thoughtful gift to receive.

The medium stockman with serpantine blade is my favorite slipjoint pattern. Nice knife there.

Congratulations. That is a sweet classic and the person that sent it to you is a classic too.

Sometimes, it's better to save the words and just say -

Amazing how some pieces of steel, brass, and handle material can hold poweful memories from deep in the heart. A favorite old pocket knife, a worn shotgun.

Objects can live.

In many ways, a decent knife that's cherished or given to you is like a companion rather than just a tool. Nice pix thanks.

Thanks for the wonderful thread!

It brought up a lot of great memories and made me tear up a bit.
