Saturday I was informed that on Sunday night our house would be invaded by young females in the form of a sleepover, and that I might want to be elsewhere :) So Sunday I headed out to the woods to work and to gather more images for my flora database. I thought I'd share some of the shots here.

The leaves are turning, lots of color now.

Some of the grape vines are in better shape than others

The golden rod is starting to go to seed

These are not muscadines in this vine, not many wild muscadines this year in my area. These are persimmons in a broken branch that fell into the vine. Some of the persimmons have gone through the bletting process and are ready to eat now, one of my favorite autumn snacks in the field :)

Odd running across turkeys during the fall turkey season

The scotch thistle has gone to seed as well

These are not grapes, it's common green brier. Not very desirable as an edible, even for the birds who eat it as sort of a last resort during the winter rather than starve...

Several balloon vines around

The black walnuts are falling, so I was able to start rebuilding my stash :)

Yes, Autumn is definitely my favorite season :)

Then a nice peaceful night. My own sleepover with just my own thoughts, the owls, the coyotes, and a nice crackling fire :D

Pretty pics. Keep em coming Brian. I can identify several plant species of plant from your threads. Goldenrod is everywhere here for example.

Goldenrod is a cool plant. Pretty flower in late summer and autumn, and then awesome tinder and kindling in the later autumn and winter :) It and the thistle seed heads are my favorite tinder materials for spark based ignition.

Oh, and definitely more photos to come. I haven't even edited all of the ones from this trip :)

After moving to Houston I miss fall. It I don't miss winter

Beautiful pictures Brian! I am always amazed by how different some of the plant life out there is compared to here.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Thanks Todd! yeah, I have a friend who lives in Santa Cruz. She and I have been exchanging pics from outings and there is quite a bit of difference.

I look forward to your threads and this one is another treat, Mist! Some wonderful photographs and I really like the foraging bounty shot :D

We are spending fall break in a cabin on top of Ski Mountain above Gatlinburg, TN. It's about as high as one can get in this area with fantastic views. The colors are just starting to change but should be very nice in a couple weeks.
On the way up Sunday we went through Cades Cove, an isolated valley located in the Tennessee section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that has several well preserved homesteads over 100 years old. While walking around at one of the cabins I observed several couples standing around a persimmon tree. They were calling it everything from a cherry to sugar plums. When I stepped between them, picked one up and ate it they all just stared at me. I said "that's a good persimmon" and walked away while my wife just shook her head.

Thanks for the photos Brian as always. These are screaming Fall to me! My second favorite season :). Never noticed your wedding band before either, sweet is that a micarta layer in the middle?

Very nice view! We have reservations in Gatlinburg for the 21st that I made when we were up there in the summer. I was hoping I was timing it well for color. I hope to do a cabin next autumn, but I still need to research those. We have always stayed in town so walking back and forth to places was easy. Very familiar with Cades Cove. I got to watch two park ranger search my truck and play with all of my knives, tomahawks, and bags of organic tinder materials for a couple of hours there once, when I stopped in for some wild life photos on my way home from doing some photo shoots in the smokies. Fun times :)

Timing on the persimmons is pretty important for enjoyment :D

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed them :) It's emerald green carbon fiber, pretty cool stuff. I'd love the same material on a knife handle but can't find any sheets of it...

I gotta get into the woods now. Too much time behind the wheel, in town, etc.

Thanks Brian!
