Today a neighbor and I needed to move a huge snow pile from my mom's drive way. Said snow pile was at least 5 feet deep, packed and frozen solid in places. Instead of chipping away at it with plastic or steel shovels, I cut the pile into blocks with my Tramontina Bolo and 24" tram, then tossed the blocks out of the way. The neighbor then used a shovel to move the small stuff. The Bolo had a nice convex edge and cut through the snow with ease, the 24 incher didn't have an edge, but it still worked pretty well. They made quick work if the huge snow pile. A friend and I are thinking of doing a winter campout sometime in Febuary and if we do it, I plan on bringing a machete with me for block cutting.

This afternoon the neighbors were out getting ready to go snow mobiling. The kids were out side playing King of the hill on an even bigger pile. I showed them how well a machete works to cut up snow so one of the teens grabbed his 18" machete and started cutting blocks too. We ended up making a bunch of blocks then throwing them at each other and slicing them up in the air. It was tons of fun.

We have between 18" and 24" of snow on the ground and thats not including the drifts. After playing in the snow a while, the kids parents came out and we all went snow mobiling. Today was the first time I drove one solo, the last time I was on one was almost 20 years ago and that was with an older kid. We had a blast. Hoping to do the same thing tomorrow. Found my inner tube so I might pump it up in the morning so the parents can pull their kids around town. The streets have a layer of snow/ice on them so we just drove around town.

The high today was between 5 and 7 degrees. Our low last night was -15. It will probably be about the same tonight and tomorrow. Even so, this didn't stop us from having a great time. All my snow stuff is infront of the fire place thawing out for tomorrow.

So Machetes, Snow and sleds = a good time! Anyone else having fun in the snow and or using their machetes this winter? IMO if your going to build a snow cave or igloo, a machete is a great help!

careful now. the $1k+ snowblower mafia might use your $15 machete to...err...change your mind about their usefulness.
