Listening to the Tube, the programming, the news, I'm getting a sense of a gradual sea change of opinion regarding 9-11.

9-11 will become a good day. One day out of a year where we remember why and who we are. A reverse Christmas. Nothing tangible given. Just the best awareness.

(if we can only survive what may come)

Amen. Great post Munk. Its a hopeful outlook that makes it beautiful. You, sir, are one hell of an American!

I'd like for 9/11 to become that. I'm not sure why it has been taking so long.

5 years on, I'd have expected the Towers to have been re-built 10 stories taller, as America thumbing its collective nose at the terrorists. Instead, it is still an open wound.

5 years on, I'd have expected a remembrance monument, even if that monument was simply OBL's head on a pike. But there's nothing tangible yet, to bring the country together in collective mourning and resolution.

There are other days which live in the collective nation-building consciousness - Pearl Harbour being one, but the various other national holidays (Memorial day, Veteran's day, Independence day etc) each contributing their own bit. I'm still waiting to see how 9/11 will emerge within that group of days of rememberance.

I really hope 9/11 becomes a glorious day of reflection. However, I am a bit dejected on what politics in America has become. My heart filled watching our leaders work side by side in the early stages. Even our fellow man extended a part of them selves in the following weeks. I was trapped with no brakes in a part of backwoods KY just a few days after the attack. I pulled off the road to a service place that was booked to the gills. They still squeezed me in because it was the right thing to do. They really saved me that day.
However, like all things in the present day and age, politics took over and a the squabbles began. It was every one else's fault. I hate to be a cynic, but I have really lost faith in my governement in the last few years. Not so much because of the bungles by the current admin, but just over the fact that no one is offering any ideas on how to fix anything. Status Quo and nothing more. It probably has to do with the fact that the last 2 elections were the first two I was ever able to vote in.
I do have faith in the American people, though. We can only be affected for so long by the talking heads that we mimic. Eventually, some is going to break their boot off in someone's @$$ and get something done;)

For the first time, I watch everything that went down that day 5 years ago. I woke up late the day it happened. It was really powerful watching it from start to finish. The confusion was so vivid. All of the chaos was sickening to see again. Not in a bad way, but in a way that really drives it home that it happened. I lift a glass to all of those that paid the terrible price, all the men that did their jobs with such courage, and say a little prayer that one day very soon we can all work side by side again to make this country stronger than ever.

Head on a pole heck...put it in a time chest and use it as a cornerstone for the new buildings.

I come back from Chinook, where I bought a maul and two wedges, and see the thread has come to the Head On A Pike stage.

Gotta admit I like it.
At least I'm not alone.
I had a wild thought this morning that if one were very rich, getting ahold of Bin Laden and putting him in harness in a small room, and then 'breaking in" to regular programing on much of the world's Television broadcast, while removing small slices and peices of him daily, would be ......well..not very healthy, no doubt. (can anyone break into TV broadcast?)

...But this day is Good, as Maui Rob said, and my idea just underworld stuff.
