A Good Deal But... What Is It?

Made a quick stop at a neighborhood gun shop this morning. I wasn't looking for a knife but found one (or maybe it found me) just the same. I asked the owner what he wanted and he told me he was getting out of the knife business and would let it go for $20. So I paid up, and left the store happy with my new purchase.

My only question at this point is what is it? I can tell from the stamp it was made in 1988-- which really blows me away to think that knife might have been sitting there in his display for twenty years. If I had to guess, I'd say the scales are burnt olive bone but I can't quite figure what the pattern is. It's marked G6199 1/2 but that pattern doesn't show up on the web sites I checked so I'm hoping one of you guys can fill in the blanks.

So, what do you think? Mint knife, no box, for twenty bucks? I'd say I have another keeper!

6299 1/2 is a fairly common jack pattern by case, so I'm guessing this is the one blade version of that - though I can't remember seeing one before.

Thanks Zip. Jack was my guess but figured someone would have the definitive answer. Also, I forgot to mention, this knife has a half stop. I think I'll have to spend some time playing with it this afternoon. :)

I'm not an expert on Case but I think G6 for green bone. The 99 pattern is a swell end jack with spear blade (often accompanied by a pen blade 6299). 1/2 indicates a variation with clip blade. IMO a very nice looking knife for $20

You scored pretty nicely there Slim. Go out and buy you a lottery ticket!

Funny you should post up Kerry, cuz it's a lot like a knife I hope to have a certain talented maker build for me some day. :D

Back to the knife, I really like the bone on this one. The green is very subtle, and only real visible where it's not burned/jidded.

Some day soon...the wait won't be too painful...like I told my kids when they were little, just a little bit longer. :)

Hiya Tex,

Don't let anyone fool you, you got yourself one helluva deal for 20.USD.. Since no one else has told you, she is a 1988 vintage. She was not the most popular model of her time, but that works in your favor as far as rarity. I would say that you should use her and enjoy her!. If it were mine I know I would!.

BTW, Does this fellow have any more for sale??

No hurry at all Kerry. I was just givin' you a little grief. I know that quality takes time and I have plenty now that the bathroom remodel is (almost) finally over. lol

You scored... Thats a sweet lookin knife. I like the raised shields, I have a few stockman and trappers with the raised shields...
I think someone offered you 30.00 for it, I'll go 32.50 LOL

In the late 80's, for a few years Case put out a limited set each year with a special coloring of bone handles. There was a red bone set, a green bone set, and a Roger's bone set.

Yours is a single blade 99-1/2 large jack pattern from the 1988 green bone set. Each years set had maybe six patterns. They were limited runs but I do not recall the quantities made.

You guys are the best, thanks for all the info. I'm pretty well tickled with this knife. I love the color and texture of the bone. The pins are slightly inset and have a nice patina to them so they blend into the handles real well. Overall it's just my kinda knife, great size, a substantial folder.

Glad to know it wasn't a popular pattern, means I'll likely have the only one handy in most instances. And limited production color for the scales is bonus points. Unfortunately, this was the only one he had like it. The others he has left are mostly tiny toothpicks in a variety of colors, a couple of Saddlehorns (red and green), a bone Hobo and one with a thumb stud and a clip.
