My sisters are getting back into riding, and I'd like to give them a good folder with a hoofpick option. The steel could be something like 440c, something good that can be left in a saddle pack, but nothing too outrageous, they don't need S30V for cutting bales of hay etc. I have no idea what type of steel should be used for the hoofpick, something dull, but enough to clean a horses hooves. I bought a cheap junker for my sister when I was 18, it was a marlinspike, and I showed my father, and he laughed, and explained to me what the spike was for, the sheepsfoot blade etc. Suffice it to say, he probably saved a couple horses, because my sisters sure as hell didn't know the difference. Thanks for the suggestions.

I made a couple of hoof picks out of scrap iron. Wrought iron will work perfectly well. For the hoof pick- make it like a flat head screw driver with a thicker, slightly wider head. I used to do a bit of riding myself, and that's all that's neccesary. Might I reccomend serrations on the knife for cutting ropes though.
