A good knife when I turn 82

First knife was earned at age 5 for saying all my memory verses.

I remember the knives when I was 22 and 42. All gone.

I'm currently balancing my 62 portfolio of cutlery.

At 82, it probably needs to be easily opened and medium/small.

I have a feeling that my current "one hand open arachnids" will be fine, but

I better get started looking for the right one, maybe with autumn leaf jig.

I'm building up my finger strength by playing the mandolin and remote control.

How about an old Boy's Knife? ;)

Wishing you many happy returns.

I'll second the suggestion of an EO #15 Boys Knife. I have a single sheepfoot version and really like it a lot. A classic for sure :)

You could pick up a GEC 68 White Owl, as well. They are about the lightest sprung GEC slipjoints I've tried.

So if I read the original post correctly, you are currently 62 and are trying to right-size your collection so that the knives in it today will be the right ones for you when you reach 82?

My dad will be 83 very soon. My mother is approaching her 80th birthday in almost the same time frame. Both of them have issues in gripping small things with their fingertips. Frequent slips and drops. Arthritis is a factor for both, but weakness of the hands and some loss of coordination is the bigger issue. Diminished eyesight might also play into it (my Dad has issues with this).

If going 'small' in choosing a folding knife at that age, I wouldn't go too small. At least from what I'm witnessing in my parents, it may become an issue.

And easy-opening is definitely a plus. Light pull + substantial 'pinchability' should be priority, combined with a handle size/shape that's easily held & controlled with the other hand.

How about a USA made Old Timer, Old Timer? ;)

:D

When I was a senior in HS, I gave my grandad an OT. (peanut size)

It sits in my safety deposit box today. My boy will pry it from hands one day.

I think that knives skipped a generation in my family. My dad had a cheap (free)

SAK, the one with scissors and toothpick.

Nah. I do plan on living long enough (92) that ladies in scrubs will try to find all of my sharp pointy objects.

I have sod busters and I have one of the GEC EO boy's knives (2 blade) and if I had issues opening a knife, I would consider carring that one of the EOs (now if they made that knife with Ivory Bone instead of the wierd nitebright). My daughter (10) has issues with many knives opening them, but absolutly loves the EO boy's knife ( but still has issues with the carbon steel part of the equation). Steven

Speaking of Friction Folders, you might check out Michael Morris Knives. It has everything an Older Gentleman could need in a knife….. Sharp Blade, No Spring and a bottle opener!!!!!!! They are good looking knives too. I hope to get mine in soon. I’m on day 104 of waiting. :o
