A good place to stay?

My wife may be travelling to San Francisco later this year. She will probably be looking for a place to stay. Does anyone from that area know of any good, reasonably priced hotels in the area? She doesn't want to be spending large amounts of money in some palace but I sure as hell don't want her staying in some slum in a bad part of town. Any suggestions appreciated.

reasonably priced and San Francisco don't really go together.
good luck......

Heh, I spent many a liberty weekend staying in $10 fleabags around Chinatown in the 80s... They weren't that bad actually. Check the travel websites for reservations at middle-class accomodations like Travelodge or Best Western. For a decent clean room in chain hotel in SF you're probably looking at a bit under $100 a night.

Ahh.. you have those chains there, great. I was sort of figuring around the $US100 a night range. I'll just call the Travelodge booking number here when I'm ready.

Thanks for the info.

On one of my first trips over there, (this would be around 20 years ago), I stayed in a YMCA hostel in SF for a couple of nights. Scarred me for life! :)

Ahh - had the same experience Gaj - but I found a good youth hostel over the bridge, right near golden gate park. Can't remember it's name now but it was a great place to stay. SF is my second favourite city in the world after Melbourne.

There is a place called The Metro Hotel right down the street from my flat in SF, decent yet colorful neighborhood of the Lower Haight, close to GG Park, not far from the Civic Center, good public transportation nearby. Google search came up with http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=metro+hotel+san+francisco&btnG=Google+Search

Less than $100, better than a Best Western, no doubt. Most of the cheap hotels are south of Market in sketchy areas. I'll be in SF the next few days, I'll find out what I can about the place.

try Hotels.com or the link provided by your airline. You can often get really good deals on decent hotels. I got a good deal in Manhattan last week, about half off the normal rate on a 2 star (decent but not Marriott quality) place right in midtown. San Francisco isn't cheap, but with some looking I'm sure you'll do well.

What's decent when it comes to a place to stay? Maybe we should get our friend here a AAA guidebook or something so he can judge....?

Years ago I stayed at the Cow Hollow in San Francisco. Nice place, good location, reasonable prices (for S.F. at least) and free parking for guests. (Being from L.A. free parking didn't seem like that big a deal, but it turned out to be a nice extra.)

Yes...please get good advice before she goes.

A couple years ago, I took my family up to a hotel in Vancouver British Columbia (Canada). The hotel looked good (and reasonably priced) on the internet. When we got there, we where square in the middle of the gay district. After the shock of seeing a slim 6'5" man in high heels, nylons, and a tiny, very short bright red dress, as well as seeing several "specialty" stores (if you know what I mean), I then found out that the hotel had a security parking garage with a closing gate. It was after those clues I deduced that I wasn't in a good part of town.

I've been in San Francisco a number of times and love the city. It has a lot to offer a visitor. I can't, though, offer any first-hand informatioin on places to stay, since I alway stayed in San Jose (actually, Saratoga).

Hope she has a good trip!
