i need a good printer for my girlfriend....about 100-150$, need to scan and be able to print pictures O.K., no professional photography, mostly used to print documents

You will get a thousand good answers. I bought this model two years ago and it is still working strong every day as my EDC normal printer. Print, Copy, Scan, Fax, it does it all well. I just bought all four inks for $16 from an aftermarket vendor and they work fine. Runs on pennies.

A guy at an electronics store told me that cheap printers exist just to sell printer cartridges....

Hewlett-Packard made their money doing printers; we've had several over the years.

I got a good deal on the Canon MP-600 and it received very good reviews online as well as from Consumer Reports.

Avoid combos for professional work. They are for general purpose only often using small cartridges. Combos are ok for simple standby and occasional use.

Set up both the independant Scanner & printer on one machine and you can easily scan to print direct.

Also separate machines can be split to different PCs allowing one person to print and another to scan.
