A good sharpener for VG-10

This may be true to an extent, but not a definate rule, imo. VG10 is a very smooth grained steel. I like to use a medium or fine diamond stone and touch up on a ceramic or hard arkansas. Black is good. Of course the Spyderco Sharpmaker 204 should be required before you buy another knife, in fact aI think that the 204 should be in everyones collection. Exteremely versatile. My vote is gonna have to be with a fine grained wet stone, the only blade I have in VG10 is a chisel ground Beretta Avenger with a laminated carbon fiber/VG10 tanto shaped blade. Every other method I've tried seems to take little chips out of the edge, granted the single edge bevel is severe, and the edge is extremely thin but I would have thought a fine diamond hone and a strop would do the job, guess not.

Ditto to above posts. It is a matter of your own preference.

I prefer my Spydie Sharpmaker 204. ;)

Good Luck.

Does this mean you have a different sharpening method for VG10? just curious. I use the spyderco bench stones, but I use them on all my knives whatever the steel. I don't find VG10 needs anything different than any other high grade stainless.

I would recomend learning freehand sharpening on a good set of bench stones, as the techniques you learn on these you can take to any other sharpening system, and its nice to be able to say you can do it.
