When it comes to axes I don't know much so I was wondering if you guys could point me towards good brands. I want something smaller that I could take hiking if I wanted (or use one handed as well). Thanks

Hi Thalestin! go check out workwearcanada.com and check out his WETTERLINGS axes. They are very very good quality, and come in small sizes for one handed use. A little more expensive is the GRABFORS BRUK axes, they make a mini that is for one handed use, but its about 160 CDN. Lee valley Tools carries them

I have an estwing that Im happy with. I made a path one day with that hatchet and a machete, the hatchet worked great, the machete useless.

I picked up the GB yesterday and have just split some firewood so far. I've never owned an axe that came from the dealer "hair popping" sharp the way this thing is. I'm very happy with it so far and I hope to get lots of great use out of it.

I chose the Wetterlings 10". Small enough for my daypack, yet still works decent.

No stocking dealers around here so I had to order blind off the net (bensbackwoods). It was a tough call between it and a 13", I like it just fine.

+1 on Gransfors Bruks....

Wetterlings is now owned by Gransfors Bruks, so great quality for the price....

You should also look at the Scagel Style Camp Axe made by Bark River Knives. Great for value for the price, all high carbon steel shaft and head. I own one and it throws chips and shavings no sweat. :D

As I understand it, Wetterlings was purchased by the same individual who owns Gransfors. I read that he has maintained the companies as separate entities, so Gransfors doesn't actually own Wetterlings---they share common ownership.
