A good survival or bowie under $125 with a leather sheath

I really dig say, the Ontario Rat 7 or the Becker bk7, or even an ESEE 6, however, the first two have crap sheaths and I prefer a leather sheath over kydex any day. I contemplated buying an unused ESEE 5 on ebay that someone bought a custom leather sheath for, but decided I wanted at least an extra inch.

Is there such thing as a good quality knife with a blade between 6' to 8' that comes with a leather sheath for under $125?

Thanks.

The Blackjack Model 7 is about the closest I know of, but it's about $40 more than that. 7" convex edge A2 tool steel blade with an excellent leather sheath.

Hm, I really love the Blackjack Model 7 but that's a pretty high pricetag, plus it's a fighting knife, a collectable, and all around just too beautiful and I just couldn't imagine beating it up doing survival tasks. I took a look at the Quartermaster, it's a very attractive blade. Thanks for your opinions, still open to suggestions.

I have had a similar quest recently and I am planning on snapping up one of the Blackjack 1-7s soon, either in stacked leather or stag. Since it's not your cup of tea, the real other contender for me is the Svord Von Tempsky Ranger (the shorter version), unfortunately at about the same price. L6 and A2 is a tough choice, both great steels.

Though not traditional, the ESEE-6 is a great great knife; maybe you could find a used one for $90 and then spend $35 on a custom leather sheath?

Hmm, well the thing is, there's nowhere that will make a custom sheath for 35 bucks, of all the places I've checked, it's been at least like 60 bucks. Man, you think these companies could provide a decent sheath with such nice knives.

Also, anyone know about the quality of Hen Rooster knives? I was looking at a really attractive model, with a pretty decent price, about 70 bucks. However, it's "german stainless" whatever that means. I've looked up what others have said, and they find the steel really high quality, then someone said they were bought out by Frost Cutlery 5 years ago and now made in Spain, I know Frost Cutlery is the scum of knife makers... so, I dunno.

I have several of the Spanish made H&Rs, and find them of good quality. The steel is very much like 440C, both from word of mouth and how it feels on the stones. And they do come with a very nice leather sheath, for well under $100. This one in bark ram's horn.

Well I've done some research, I don't think I'm up for the Hen Rooster knives. As far as I understand, they used to be really good quality, but have declined in quality since cheapo Frost Cutlery bought em' out.

I'm going to move this to General Knife Discussion as it's not primarily about traditional knives.

Buck Limited Edition Frontiersman bowie. Black Linen Micarta, Stainless steel, very nice leather sheath, $120. I bought one on a whim and I'm absolutely amazed at the quality of this blade. As I mentioned in another thread, Buck produced these in their custom shop and believe me, it shows! They are still available but drying up fast.

Buck 119 Special. I absolutely love mine, it's awesome. The 119 Special by Buck is a knife that has stood the test of time.

I don't recommend leather sheaths for survival in moist environments, but it just looks, feels and smells so nice...

The leather sheath on the 119 is particularly well-designed. It features a drain hole, and its retention method is a very interesting wrap-around with a snap button. Super high QC on the sheath. I'm still amazed.

Condor Hudson Bay is just a little over your size there, but might be worth looking at. 1075 carbon steel blade of 8.5 inches, comes fairly sharp, has nice leather sheath, and runs around $40. Get it from Baryonxy and pick their special grade option to make it even better.
