We don't get a whole lot of crime at the university here, and most of it tends to be rather petty; missing wallet, missing backpack, etc. The kiddies are real bad about leaving their laptops unattended.

Over the last few weeks, we've been getting hit up for credit cards and such from the athletic complex, and we've had a series of thefts of laptops from the other end of campus. We even put out a "bait" computer and one of our surveillance cameras.
A week ago Friday, we got a call about a fellow "camping out" in a fire-escape stairwell on one of our buildings. Turned out to be an old friend of mine, a guy we had arrested (and had quite a rasslin' match with) back in 1993. Turned out he was the credit-card theif; two hours of questioning and he confessed. He was stealing to eat... So, one down.

Yesterday, we got a "suspicious person" call in the area we'd lost several laptops. Description was on the money for our suspect. We all flooded the area, even the chief. One of our guys is staying in the vicinity of the original call, near the architecture school, and the dude walks right by him, headed for the metrolink station.
Turns out to be our dude, and a bad-boy he is. Parole violator, armed robber, burglar, etc. Guy would take the metrolink to the university, and put on an old housekeeping uniform shirt, then stroll around looking for stuff to grab.
He'll be going back to the joint even without charges from us.
Two down.

Ah well, they'll just make more....

Awesome. I'm glad you caught those jerks. I had my laptop stolen from me a week before finals during my first semester in law school. I kept all of my outlines and notes on it. To say I was upset would be putting it lightly. I totally FREAKED out. They never did find my laptop.

It turned out, the laptop was the least of it. After finals, I discovered that the scumbag stole the piggy bank that I got from my great grandmother. It was very special to me. I felt so guilty for crying over the laptop and not noticing the piggy bank missing that it took me a week before I could say anything about it to anyone. I don't think I've ever felt that guilty about anything in my life. :( The jerk probably broke it and stole the change. :( Absolutely devastating.

I am glad you got the bad guys!!

jsmatos: That is horrible!! I would have freaked out too! That is totally understandable!!! That is really sad about your piggy bank!!

As all the tech guys say, Back It Up!

We had a professor loose his laptop a few years ago, had the entire book he was writing on the HD. No backups, no copies.... He was not a happy dude.

Hey, glad you got the dude. On my last job somebody walked up and swiped my phone, with all my important contacts in it out of my coat. I forgot it was there and by the time I went back for it, the dude had grabbed. JSMatos I know exactly (well not quite but close) how you feel. During grad school my whole life was on that thing, if it ever went away I'd have been so screwed. Now that i'm done only about 80% of my life is on it and most of that's backed up, but I'd still be pretty screwed. It's awful about the piggy bank too. Those are the things that hurt the worst, I have a few things from my grandpa that I feel the same way about.
