We don't get a whole lot of crime at the university here, and most of it tends to be rather petty; missing wallet, missing backpack, etc. The kiddies are real bad about leaving their laptops unattended.
Over the last few weeks, we've been getting hit up for credit cards and such from the athletic complex, and we've had a series of thefts of laptops from the other end of campus. We even put out a "bait" computer and one of our surveillance cameras.
A week ago Friday, we got a call about a fellow "camping out" in a fire-escape stairwell on one of our buildings. Turned out to be an old friend of mine, a guy we had arrested (and had quite a rasslin' match with) back in 1993. Turned out he was the credit-card theif; two hours of questioning and he confessed. He was stealing to eat... So, one down.
Yesterday, we got a "suspicious person" call in the area we'd lost several laptops. Description was on the money for our suspect. We all flooded the area, even the chief. One of our guys is staying in the vicinity of the original call, near the architecture school, and the dude walks right by him, headed for the metrolink station.
Turns out to be our dude, and a bad-boy he is. Parole violator, armed robber, burglar, etc. Guy would take the metrolink to the university, and put on an old housekeeping uniform shirt, then stroll around looking for stuff to grab.
He'll be going back to the joint even without charges from us.
Two down.
Ah well, they'll just make more....
