In Walmart they are selling a Gerber "Freeman" hunter 3.75" 6 AUS blade, pear wood handle for $39.67. (Full tang)

People are always looking for great deals so I thought I'd post it.

That is an awesome deal. I am not buying it since I have a great knife in that size.

For the money there is no real comparison out there. Lately I have been asking myself.....How much of a knife does one need? We all get obsessed with fancy steel custom designs and when the end of the day comes really all that matters is that it cuts what needs to be cut.

Maybe I am becoming more cynical as I age, but my beef about crappy steels USED TO BE they lose their edge so fast and it is hard to sharpen now that I really know how to sharped that is not a big deal any longer.

If you are hunting big game, and using an AUS 6 blade knife to process it, don't forget to take a sharpener with you. You will need it.

The main reason I got into knifemaking was to get away from knives that wouldn't stay sharp.

However, I suppose if you just want a cheap knife to look like you could take it hunting, this will do OK.

HOW MUCH WORK DOES A HUNTING KNIFE HAVE TO DO? I HAVE SKINNED MOOSE, ELK, CARIBOU, BEAR, A HOST OF AFRICAN ANIMALS, THE ONLY TIME I FOUND I NEEDED TO RESHARPEN A KNIFE IS THE EVENING WHEN WE DRESSED 6 WILD HOGS. SO I AGREE WITH CHRIS, YOU WILL HAVE ENOUGH KNIFE TO DO THE JOB WITH JUST ABOUT ANY REPUTABLE MAKERS BLADE. COLD STEEL, BUCK, GERBER,KERSHAW, LEATHERMAN, PUMA, SPIDERCO, KNIVES OF ALASKA, COLT, MORA, THEY WILL ALL GET YOU THERE. I HAVE BEEN THERE WITH ALL OF THESE KNIVES AND NOT ONE OF THEM HAS LET ME DOWN.

I'm with chrisaloia. Now I only dress out deer, but almost any knife will do that job fine.I did 3 deer this year with a Case Trapper and a Puma Whitehunter,1 of the bucks was skinned and 1/4'ed,The 2 other deer just field dressed.

I have a friend who bought a Schrade Breast.A real $20 pos to us knife guys.He loves it!! He did his deer last year and one this year with it,has yet to sharpen it.

Being the "knife guy" on a 525 man fire dept. I get asked to sharpen a lot of guys hunting knives. The ones guys seem to use the most are Gerber Gators,EZ outs, and Buck folders. No high end steel there...yet no one is asking me to recomend a better knife, because those knives work just fine.

Warriorsociologist-- that's a sweet little blade for under $40. Have you used one? Looks like it would make a great general camp knife.

I went into gerbers site and here's their product description of the knife. BTW, for the money, it seems like a fine knife.

Product Description:
"Designed by hunters, for hunters" is the best description of the Freeman™ Hunter. Although the polished pear wood handles give aesthetic appeal, this is designed to be a working knife capable of skinning both small and large game. The 3.25" blade is forged out of AUS-8 stainless steel and features a full length tang to provide additional strength for the toughest of jobs. The dropped point tip makes skinning a breeze. With safety in mind, the Freeman™ Hunter incorporates several unique attributes: true finger guard, finger grooves that serve as a positive blade indexing indicators, thumb serrations allowing for additional cutting pressure and indentations on the full length tang for a sure grip.

Technical Specs:
Overall Length: 8.25''
Length of Blade: 3.25''
Weight: 4.1 oz.
Blade Style: Fine edge
Blade Material: AUS-8 Stainless steel
Handle Material: Polished pear wood
Sheath: Leather

Thanks for posting the exact specs. More impressive than the Walmart site.

The "average joe" hunter shops at Walmart or a hunting supply place and expensive hunting knives is not part of that mindset.

Also to point out, I have owned quite a few custom designs by popular makers in the 90's. Right now money is extremely tight so I am in the cheaper market for a while, but happily I am finding plenty of knife there.

AUS 8 is a fine steel, I have owned a few knives with this and found them to be more than acceptable. Personally I love carbon best but as I said I take what I can get.

Yep, I owned a CRKT with aus 6 and wasn't impressed with the steel, but the aus 8 seemed a lot better to me. Course, I'm no expert on knives, but as long as they take an edge and I don't have to sharpen em after cuttin up a couple of critters, I'm happy with it. Yep, for the money, that's a fine knife that'll last you a lot of years.

Wish I would have seen this thread earlier. I just left the Walmart shopping center and it's probably going to be impossible to go in there until after Christmas. I'm old enough to remember when Bucks, Shrades, Gerbers and Case knives were considered top of the line. I've used both AUS 6 and 8 and they both seem fine to me.

Warriorscoiologist, went to Queen site. Pardon my ignorance, but I can't find any specification for 4100's on type of steel. Which button do I click on? Any idea of RC?

If you do get a gerber freeman I would recomend havind a high quality leather or a kydex sheath made for it. The one I purchased for a friend had a sheath that looked like it was made out of thin cardboard, and did not retain the knife by anything other than gravity (very loose fit). A good sheath is just as important as the knife. A good sheath will keep you from loosing your knife and may keep you from getting hurt.

The best deal on a Wally World hunting knife is still the Buck 110. $29.97 and backed up by Buck's customer service.

Buck wrenches all the performance it can out of 420HC with its heat treat, and their new "Edge 2000" process gives the edges on 110s even more durability.

I bought one of the Queen hunters that Warriorscoiologist recommends. Nice knife. I got the "limited run" version with stag handles, but I may actually pick up the micarta version as well. Great knives.

Glad you like it! :) I have one of the stag/stagbone handled ones on its way now...If I like it as much as I think I will, I may decide to keep oly it and If you are interested, I'll sell you my micarta one (so I don't have to send it back). ...or I may decide I actually DO need both. ;)
