So, my daughter will be 5 in a few months, so I figured it was time to take her on a real hike with me. She has gone on a few family outings that were sort of like hikes, but this was a hike for the sake of hiking.

It started out okay... but then it got bad... but then it got great. About 3/4 of a mile in, she wanted to go home. Turns out she needed to use the restroom. Luckily the trail had a toilet a couple hundred yards back, so we turned back. I figured she'd still want to go home, so I thought the hike was a bust.

I came up with the idea of finding a spot by the stream and eating our snacks. We did that, and after hanging out for a while, I gave her the option of going back or "exploring" the trail. She chose to continue.

The rest of the hike was great. We took a shorter loop than I had originally planned, but still ended up going a bit over 2 miles. She was happy seeing the bugs and crossing the stream a few times and finding cool things along the trail (like acorns, neat rocks, etc.). It was just like I had hoped it would be.

So, the hike was a success and she's excited about going on another one. Yay!

Now for the knife part!

I got a new knife from Ray Laconico. It's awesome. Like all of Ray's knives, it's utterly perfect. This hike was it's first outing.

I sent him the idea of what I wanted, Ray tweaked it a bit, and the result was totally sweet. 4 5/8" blade, 4 7/8" handle, and 5/32" 1095 steel.

Here are pics of the hike and the knife:

Looks like a great day!

That's great to be taking your daughter out and getting her comfortable out on the trail.

Nice looking knife too.

Wildewinds, that top shot says it all, memories for a lifetime. The outdoors and the younger generation are becoming all to scarce. I go thru our neighborhood on Saturday mornings & I can not believe how empty the parks & ball diamonds are. Good to get out, & good to spend time with family.
Be safe.
p.s.: Oh, almost forgot, nice looking knife as well . . :)

Awesome photos. Your daughter looks really happy in that first shot. That knife looks great, I love the blade geometry.

I spent the day out with my oldest remembering a lot of our earlier hikes when she was little. It's hard to believe she will be 18 her next birthday. Enjoy it as much and as long as you can because trust me the time does fly by. Luckily I also have a 5 year old daughter so I am starting all over again there :) .

Nice! I like the clean, functional design Ray L. puts in his knives! That one looks to be an excellent example.

Sounds like a great day! Thanks for letting us all go with you. Too few kids have someone that will spend a day just with them, not to mention spend it with them in nature.

Wildwinds that is awesome. Your little girl will remember this time that she got to spend with you. What memories the both of you will have.

Great job.

Bryan
