So, my daughter will be 5 in a few months, so I figured it was time to take her on a real hike with me. She has gone on a few family outings that were sort of like hikes, but this was a hike for the sake of hiking.
It started out okay... but then it got bad... but then it got great. About 3/4 of a mile in, she wanted to go home. Turns out she needed to use the restroom. Luckily the trail had a toilet a couple hundred yards back, so we turned back. I figured she'd still want to go home, so I thought the hike was a bust.
I came up with the idea of finding a spot by the stream and eating our snacks. We did that, and after hanging out for a while, I gave her the option of going back or "exploring" the trail. She chose to continue.
The rest of the hike was great. We took a shorter loop than I had originally planned, but still ended up going a bit over 2 miles. She was happy seeing the bugs and crossing the stream a few times and finding cool things along the trail (like acorns, neat rocks, etc.). It was just like I had hoped it would be.
So, the hike was a success and she's excited about going on another one. Yay!
Now for the knife part!
I got a new knife from Ray Laconico. It's awesome. Like all of Ray's knives, it's utterly perfect. This hike was it's first outing.
I sent him the idea of what I wanted, Ray tweaked it a bit, and the result was totally sweet. 4 5/8" blade, 4 7/8" handle, and 5/32" 1095 steel.
Here are pics of the hike and the knife:
