There seems to be an increasing number of shows or "get togethers" that combine a long weekend of spectacular knives, visiting/relaxing with top makers and basically just kicking back and enjoying life. This one even seems to be one the wives will be interested in. Larry Fuegen describes the event below.

If you are looking for a new kind of knife show to attend, the Wickenburg Caballero Art Roundup will offer you a unique opportunity to experience the Southwest, interact with the makers, and have the chance to add some wonderful new knives and western gear to your collection.

The show will be held Dec. 5-6, 2008 at the historic Rancho De Los Caballeros guest ranch and resort in Wickenburg, AZ. The show will include a preview of all the work on Friday followed by an afternoon trail ride with the makers and a sunset desert cookout complete with campfire, cocktails, a western balladeer and a fantastic meal.

Saturday afternoon will feature another short preview followed by the sale of the work. This will be done by using a box and draw tickets, similar to the AKI show.

The cost to attend is
single----$725.00
double---$925.00

This package includes rooms, meals, taxes, gratuities, and normal free amenities of the Ranch, also the Roundup activities, trail ride cookout, and show. This is a great value at a true Southwest resort. You can check out their website at http://www.sunc.com

The knifemakers will be:
Harvey Dean - http://harveydeancustomknives.com/
Rick Dunkerley - http://www.dunkerleyhandmadeknives.com/
Larry Fuegen - http://www.larryfuegen.com/
Tim Hancock.

The Western gear makers will be:

Brian Hochstrat- saddler, leather work and engraving. - www.bhsaddles.com
Lisa & Loren Skyhorse- saddles and architectural leatherwork - www.skyhorse.com
Dave Alderson-silversmith
Wayne Bevan-rawhide braiding

Time is running out and space is limited at the Ranch so make your reservations now by contacting Joe Jones. His cell is 928-231-4300 and his Email is diamondbarj@silverstar.com

Kevin,

Thanks for bringing this show to folks' attention. Western Arts/Crafts such as Saddlery, Spur-Making, Silversmithing, and Knife-making have been established and high-dollar venues for artists and collectors since the days of the California Gold Rush, and before. The people who attend this show for the "Horsey" aspect will be exposed to some of the best Bladesmiths in the world, and those knife collectors who may go will find their interest similarly expanded. This can only be good for all. Wish I could go, just to see...

I couldn't agree more John.

I spent quite a bit of time looking over the websites. The leather work is outstanding. And Brian Hochstrat's engraving is out of this world.

Don't think I could bring myself to set my ass on one of those beautiful saddles  :D ;) Would have to display it.

Just wondering if there's any reports on this show? I realize it was a small show but though some here may have gone.
I really wanted to attend this one but just couldn't make it happen.

Hi to you all,
The Wickenburg show was what every show should be, We had serious clients attending and had an opportunity to really spend some time with them. We went on the trail ride together and mingled around the campfire at the cook out, that was great. The next morning many of us went and shot trap for awhile before the show opened for the final viewing. The show was short and sweet as theses type are and few of us went away disappointed maker and collector alike.
Joe Jones will be posting pictures in the near future, I had a fine time and hope those collectors that did not make it will consider the show next year.
I will post some photos of what I had at the show once I figure out how to do that.

Hello everyone, If you weren't at Wickenberg you missed a real good time. Joe Jones did an excellent job of organizing this show. I've never been to an event where you had the time to visit with people interested in your knives like you were able to do there. There was plenty of preview time. We were able to visit even more when we had a trailride and cookout in the desert. As for the show, everyone sold knives. I had two knives and my first custom made walking cane for sell. I sold the knives but still own the cane. The uniqueness of the show was not about the selling. It was about getting to know the people better that were interested in what we brought to sell. Accomadations were excellent. Food was great. Weather was perfect. Everyone I talked to wanted to come back next year. On Sunday, my wife, Deborah, asked me "Harvey do we have to go home?"

Harvey Dean

enjoyed the format (relaxed) and the venue (Los Caballeros is a dude ranch/spa/golf resort). This was the first (will not be the last) mini-show that I have attended. It kinda reminded me of the AKI....viewing opportunity and time to talk to makers, good food and drink, great company, drawing for the right to purchase, etc.. just a smaller more intimate event. I already knew all the makers but a great opportunity to spend more one-on-one time with them talking knives and life in general.

BTW, Harvey Dean managed 24 of 25 clays on the trap range! We probably need to call him Dead eye Dean here on out.

P.S. Oh yea, the knives were great too!
