A great little light/whistle combo

On my B-day, my daughters bought me this flashlight/whistle combination from Home Depot (also available from Staples). It is made by www.lifegear.com. It is essentially a plastic tube about 7 1/2" long and 3/4" in diameter that is both a light, glow tube and a flashing strobe as well as a whistle. The batteries are rated for 200 hours of use and you can apparently get free replacement batteries (shipping and handling not included). I am very impressed with this piece of kit. The flash light is very bright; the flashing strobe works very well - I used it on Halloween walking a street with my children; decent pea-less whistle with a protective cap; a note on the whistle: if you remove the plastic cover, you will need to put a piece of duct tape around it to keep it on while on your pack. I recommend these to all my cub scouts at this point - $5 - you can't beat it.

I was looking at them at Wally World today. I might have to go back and pick them up for the kids packs

I just saw those at Target yesterday.....pretty cool and a cheap price!

Yep, can't beat the price.

Great for kids, IMO. The strobe function works very well and these easily attach to pack or a wrist. Great safety item...

Great idea --especially for the little ones

Thanks for posting

Thanks. 200 hrs +/- of a flashing strobe tube is a great signal. That and 3 quick blasts on the whistle every hour makes for a decent and easy way for a child or adult to be found quickly...

Oh hell yeah!

Im gonna grab a few for the boys' stockings, and a couple for the gloveboxes!!!

Thanks brotha!

I already ordered em each a Mora and firesteel. This will be a nice addition to those!

Oh yeah. Survival stockings.

I picked up a few of those earlier this year on clearance for $2. The whistle isn't great and the cap does constantly fall off of them (I just chucked the caps). The flashlight is very bright, and the body light isn't too bad, although I haven't found them in yellow, which I think would be brighter and more noticeable.

Old military trick we used with chem lights: take your light and attach it to a few feet of cordage. When trying to signal with the light swing it around in a circle and instead of a 4 inch light stick you have a 6 foot (or whatever length cord you used) doughnut that is much more visible from a longer distance.

Kage,

Great idea with the cordage! You are right about the whistle cap. I put a piece of duct tape on the one that is on my pack. You could also just leave the original plastic packaging on until you need the whistle. I find that the tube is pretty visible on the "strobe" mode, trick-or-treating convinced me that you can see these at a pretty good distance....
