A great local loss...

If you live in or near central Alabama, you've at least heard of a locally owned sporting goods/outdoors store called 'Mark's Outdoors' in Vestavia, just south of Birmingham. Sure, they carried all kinds of goodies - but the huge rectangle of display cases chock full of knives, from Arno Bernard to Zero Tolerance, is unbelievable. I have related my glee at reading here of the latest Benchmade, Buck, Hinderer, Kershaw, Spyderco, Microtech, Zero Tolerance, etc, models and how folks were pre-paying to get in line for them... and I could just drive over and pick one up from stock there. Add Surfire flashlights to the mix, too. It has been a great experience. The knowledgable and helpful knife staff were just as happy selling a young man an inexpensive knife as they were selling a better funded shopper a $1,295 William Henry.

Mark Whitlock, the visionary owner, lost his health battles, way too early in life, Wednesday. He was a fine fellow and will be sorely missed. I don't know what is ahead for the store - or it's great knife section. I would imagine a bean counter - with a clinical look at sales/turnover, etc, vs floor space, might downsize the knife section significantly. I mention this here for two reasons - to celebrate Mark and to inform folks of the best knife store I've seen. If you are 'on the fence' re a new knife - and want to see & hold one - take a trip to Mark's Outdoors. Bring your moola - or a CC - you might just have to buy something. You'll certainly get to see & fondle some legendary knives!

I lived in Birmingham for 12 years and I probably went by Marks at least once every couple of months. Great shop with a great selection of knives as you said. Sorry to hear about Marks passing, smoke and prayers sent for his friends and family.

I am sorry to hear of Mark's passing. I have heard nothing but good things about his store and staff. His family and friends will be in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Sorry to hear about Mark. I'm way over on the west coast but know of the store through a YouTuber who highlights it on some of his videos & talks about the knives he purchased/traded for.

I have also dealt with Randy, the knife guy, over the phone & he couldn't be a nicer more helpful fellow. I'm sure that is just reflection of Mark's customer service philosophy.

Mark s has always been a great resource for knife people as well as hunters and fishermen. I hope the family will maintain the high level of the business. My condolences to them.
