The typical Nepalese weapons used for the decapitation of a bullock or water buffalo on the last day of Dashera are pictured here. What is unique is this rare 18thc hanshee (B). The ram dao (A) and the kora (D) were also used. Both these examples are also 18thc.

I have shown a 20thc 'janawar katne'(C) and an M43 to show relative size. This huge hanshee is 27.75" long and only weighs 2lbs 3oz and is an example of a large blade that is strong, well formed and still light. A remarkable piece.

Along with the bullock the other animals used in sacrifice would be sheep, goats, dove and chickens. Even the chicken eggs! There are scaled down ram daos made just for the birds which are very pretty and worth seeking out. The main weapon used now is a ram dao or a kukri.

That reminds me, I still owe you a picture of my Ram Dao. I'll see if I can't get it snapped sometime next week.

I'm still waiting for an opportunity to go out to California and get some pictures of my Ram Dao with this young bellydancer:
