Thanks for the comments,........it's obviously curly "something",.which is what I like,.......but wasn't sure what. The stain is designed for curly maple but I thought even if it wasn't maple it would be ok to use.

I forgot to put in the start of the post the hatchet head is stamped "Evansville Tool Works TEST-D"
