What a gorgeous November day on the island!
Sweet times with Stuart Branson :)

He's really a fungi

Summit.

Sunday knife show;

Some good knife test opportunities.

Stu's lost some weight. He used to look jolly. Now he looks like a badass.

He's a sabre rattler.

I like it. Dragon Boat Paddle.

I'll like it more when it has a handle.

First attempt at stacked leather. This is a manly knife.

Our niche is out there.

Interesting use for a carpenter's hatchet! *lol*
Mounting it from the top of the haft must give a much better grip than the traditional tomahawk style.

I like the leather-handled bowie too... very serious, no-nonsense.

Jealous, looks like a blast with some fantastic blades.

Lorien, Look like a relaxed day away from building trails and working on bikes. Good times with bladed objects shared your good friend Stu. Hope there was an adult beverage or two at the end of the day.

Great pics of beautiful country as well my friend

Thanks for sharing

Do you know what kind of mushroom that is (nice pun, BTW!)?

Oh, and hope you enjoyed that Strongbow before Stuart demolished the can.

you summed it up nicely, my friend :)

EVERY one of those blades has MAJOR cool factor. If you guys are partaking of that amanita muscaria for inspiration, I need to try some! :D

Thanks for the additional pics of the saber. Would love to see more of that folder showing the action in operation, BTW.

Great pics. Looks like a lot of fun.

You mean that white cord wrapped around the dragon boat paddle isn't the finished handle? ;)

I really like that stacked leather bowie too.

Good stuff.

Cool pics Lorien, it was a fun afternoon wandering the maze of trails.

Lorien was definitely leading me in circles but I just happily followed swinging the sabre.

Love the yoda pic Lorien... ha.

Some background on the knives..

Most everything is unfinished or an experiment.. The kitchen knife was inspired by Murray Carter's kuro-ichi and is a "hot dog in a bun" construction with a bit of W2 in a mild steel jacket. It was an exercise in making a very thin blade, 2mm, and the construction method and materials.. I just put a rough handle on it and have been using it in the kitchen for the last few months and it's been working great.

The folder was inspired by a youtube video by Gary Huston. I wanted a folder for myself and thought to try this as blacksmithing practice and the fact that I can never bring myself to buy a folding knife. The ones I like are too expensive for me to use.. ha.
The damascus was a practice billet too as I haven't done much damascus.

The leather stacked handle again... an experiment in technique. I find it an extremely comfortable material. Perhaps less so if it were polished and buffed but at this rougher state it's grippy but with a slight sense of softness. It's not soft though as I beat on some stuff pretty hard and it didn't move or deform or anything.

The sabre.. well I've mentioned that before but I also wanted to test it out on Lorien's trails as this was my first use of L6 and I was curious to see how the edge held up under an afternoon of more sustained use against some really tough material. It worked great! Much better than I thought in terms of design too. It really cut very well and will definitely inform some later bush sword ideas.

Though I test my blades few get such a long test as these to check out edge retention and hardness so I was happy to see everything worked out great and reaffirm how well W2 performs.

The dragon boat paddle is a design Lorien sent me and I only got to this stage but wanted him to check it out. I will be finishing it up soon and we will post about it at more length with the details of the design (and the name..):)

You should try stacked birch bark. It's grippy too, but not as soft as leather. More durable though.

c'mon, brother Matthew! Doooo eeeet!
