LT, Codger lrv.....maybe one of you historians can help me out.

What was the connection (or not) between Schrade and Cattaraugus Cutlery Company from Little Valley NY?
I think they were in the same area as Schrade, but I can't find a New York road map in Oregon.

I have seen some of their nice old knives and they are impressive.

Thanks,
Dale

Dale,
I believe the Cattaraugus link was strongest with Case...as founder John Brown Francis Champlin's wife Theresa, was actually the sister of W.R., Jean, John, and Andrew Case...and they were all in business for a time.
The original company was just a distributor of cutlery, until purchasing some equipment and becoming the maker of high quality knives, until 1963.

Maybe there was a Schrade link as well.
I'm sure others will chime in here.

Thanks Bill.
I have seen some of their stuff also and it looks like good quality. But, of course I am a sucker for carbon steel. :)

Actually it is not in the same area. If you ever get a chance to find one, the book CASE the first 100 years was a great reference for this material. LT PS How have you been Dale Have not heard from you, How is your daughter ( I beleive ) who was in the car accident?

Thanks Red,
Those are nice looking knives, spendy too!
I wonder how they compare to Canal Street?

Some Case knives were made by George Schrade. I don't know about Cattaraugus knives though.

The Case Cutlery Company also sold a "Wire Jack" pattern knife (W1216) using a couple of variations on their tang stamps e.g. "CASE TESTED XX" and "CASE PAT. 9-21-26". In both of these stamps, the word "CASE" is the older "tested" 1920-1940 version. The stamp could appear either above or below the cap lifter. These "Case" knives were made entirely in the Schrade company in Bridgeport, Ct. This was common for one knife company to make knives for another, incidentally, Schrade also made "Pull Balls" for Case and large switchblades for Remington.

The northwestern Pa. and southwestern, upstate NY area used to be a major cutlery production region. I think Catteraugus is a small town in NY near Bradford in this area. The region is still home to Case, Queen, and Ka-bar manufacturing plants(you'd think I would have a better selection of retail cutlery available since I live very close to this area, but thats another thread topic), I've visited the Case and Ka-bar factory stores and museums, but Queen doesn't have one. Little Valley is another old, Case related name that come from a town in this region. I think?
