A Homemade "Survival Staff"?

Has anyone ever put together a homemade survival staff - that is, a hollow hiking staff designed to carry some essentials inside it? Maybe an aluminum or fiberglass staff, a single piece or made in several sections, or from a combination of materials? Seems like an interesting idea, at least in theory. I've seen a book for sale on how to make one type and another staff that was commercially manufactured, but am more interested in hearing from anyone who has made (and used!) one.

Hi Maury,

I tried to make one a couple of times, but lacking the right materials quit trying.

Then I realised that just having a nice 5 foot Ratan stick with a "gripping area wound with 2 mm nylon rope (about 50 feet of line) was better and I can stuff whatever I could have fitted in a hollw staff in a small belt "pack" sized 6" long by 3.5" wide by 3" deep.
It also made all the "survival" items more accessible.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Actually, I made one several months ago.

Went to a hardware shop. Had an iron pipe of certain thickness cut into 38inch length and another about 12inches long.

Had some end joiners made with steel caps.

The two pieces of different lengths can be joined into one long staff.

I painted the two pieces black. Gave them several coatings. I have not put any of the survival stuff in the staff.

Presently, I take the longer piece when I go for walks. It is a little heavy because it is iron afterall. It serves well as a tool for strengthening wrists and for specialised exercises.

Quite easily done. Needs only a wild imagination, and a hardware shop nearby.

Doc Ron had a great version in Vol. 6 of his "Woodsmaster" series made from ski poles--very ingenious! Wish he'd market those, and the metal 4-pointed bunny harvester he showed in the same video...hint, hint!
