A Hori Hori! A Japanese garden knife that you can do just about anything with. They are single beveled blades and this version is over 12" long and 1/4" with fuller down the middle (doesn't show the depth well in the picture) for weight reduction. It's also my first time doing an integral socket handle. Spears!

I made this for my wife for Mother's day and thought I would show it here for fun.

The picture is my first time photographing a knife using the merge to HDR function in Photoshop. It's a method that allows you take several exposures and combine them.

that is awesome!

Garden Ninja!

I love it. Any other pic angles, like the back side, so we can see the other side of the socket, etc?

HIP-HIP-HORI...........dandelions will simply wilt when they see your wife with this in hand

Scott,

I hope she enjoys it. I have used them at work and really liked them. It looks like you did a great job of the socket too. They are not as easy as one would think. I made a spear for my wife for her birthday (her request). Getting a smooth even socket was the hardest part.

Thanks folks!

Scott...Lydia just went up another notch on the cool wife factor for asking for a spear for her birthday.

Scott, as a gardener who has spent probably over 1000 hrs on his knees weeding garden beds (lotsa couch grass) i'd like to see a comparison test between this one and another, just the same but shorter, 8-9". Could you make your wife one of these and see which she prefers after a few months ?
I think the longer one might be more tiring to use and the shorter one just as effective.
Depending upon price, i think there are enough of us knifer-gardener types that there is a market for them.

Roland...

I agree that it would make more sense for the smaller one. And thinner in cross section as well (although with the fuller... the weight isn't that bad). I made this one because we live in a very wooded, kind of wild place.. and I thought it would be nice to also have something to use as an 'axe' and machete. Kind of an all around 'bush blade' as well.

I was hoping to get a run of them going to offer to local gardener's at art fairs around here and was already planning on the smaller version. Why don't you send me an email and I can keep you updated?

Hori horis are great for weeding as well as transplanting. One of these days I'm going to forge up some of these cool tools too. Thanks for posting yours. If you don't mind, I'm going to copy one of your photos to my Onenote folder on hori horis. Here's a shot of an old beater I have used for years (along with a harvesting blade.)
