I figure this is one of those safe groups of guys to have a conversation that starts like this....
"Hi, my name is Barritt and I love peanuts."

"Hi Barritt."

Haha, so It seems funny to me at least. ;) I have a peanut, and until this week have not really carried it much or used it much. It was my Sunday knife, or when I was dressed up. I like Big Jack knives, and Big Stockmans, the Buck 110, Queen Mt. Man; something that is a hoss of a knife that can handle about anything, and fills my hand up nicely. BUT.... here is the thing, and it took the wisdom of older friends like jackknife to help me learn this... I don't need that much knife... unless I have skinnin' a deer.

I have had some different jobs in my short life, been a welder/sheet metal fabricator, Carpenter, "Box Mover" but currently and for the rest of my life, I am a preacher. On the average given day I don't need that much blade. A small jackknife is able to take care of most of my needs around my study, church office, home and such. Today I opened some packages of books, the mail, cut up some boxes, opened some charcoal bags to grill with, cut open some bags of diapers, some some twine, cut some fruit for baby food... probably a few other things I can't think of... it is late. Every thing I did, the peanut did great at. It has taken me a long time, but I think I am comfortable with only a small knife in my pocket and not some huge thing on my belt.
The peanut is a versatile, & beautiful cutting machine, and I love them. I am hooked, it is my edc, in fact I am gonna sell some "big" knives I don't need to carry anymore. So thankyou to jackknife, who by the way you are probably responsible for most of Case's peanut sales in the last two years, for helping me see the value of a small knife, and all that it can do. I was getting harrassed carrying a big sheath knife on my belt with my shirt and tie!!:( ;) So I bought and am carrying the case Chestnut peachseed jigged bone peanut with Blued CV blades everyday, and then on sunday I am carrying the prime stag peanut. I will take some pics this week to share my new peanuts! Thanks for listening to my humble confession... figured it was time to talk/ post more and lurk less.

You're not alone. I got a Case dark red bone peanut a few weeks ago. I only planned to carry it when I wear slacks but I fell in love with it once I got it and it's even replaced my sodbuster jr as EDC.

I have one too, mostly due to sm2 and jackknife. We're not quite as close as some folks get to their peanuts, but I'm happy enough with it. It doesn't ride solo with me very often, but ... it's a good little guy to have along.

A case CV peanut is all you really need. I got the yellow handle version a month ago and I haven't put it down since. :D Now its slowly replacing my spyderco endura as edc. And its much more sheeple friendly too.

And another convert to the fold.

Its all in what your taste is, and I think that changes as we age. I think as we go through life, and different experiances get layered on, our perceptions change. Perceptions on how we view things, people, ourselves, what tools we need.

I didn't realize it till an older mentor pointed it out to me, that even when skinning a deer, I was only using the first inch and a half to two inches of blade on a 4 inch blade knife. At the time I was using a Buck woodsman and this older man was using a 2 1/2 inch little custom sheath knife. He was doing the same job on a very similar size deer as mine, and if anyting was getting ti done a bit faster. The difference? He was in his 60's and I was in my early 30's, and he's been doing this since before I was born.

I think in some ways a peanut is a study in perception. Its a pretty little thing, but many view it as too small to be taken seriously as a knife. To some, size does matter. But I grew up with a man who lived his whole life with a peanut as his pocket knife, and a .22 Colt Woodsman as his only gun. Just like a peanut, theres many on the gun forums that scorn a .22 as a kids gun, a beginers gun, not enough gun to be used for serious shooting. Yet I had the experiance of knowing a professional poacher who used nothing but his .22 bolt action rifle. I guess his perception of things was a little different.

I hate to get to mettiphoric (I don't know if thats even a real word) this early in the morning, but sometimes I think a peanut is sort of like a study of real life. People do judge too many things on size. Its a fact that taller people get more and better raises at work. Never mind that the Wally Cox type of little guy may be a darn genious, he doesn't stand out as well.

In the real world of opening dog food bags, mail, cutting twne, or a good hot dog roasting stick with your grandson, how much blade do you really need day to day? Need, not want because you just want to collect them? I guess maybe as I got older, I got more pragmatic. A hazzard of age. And as I got more pragmatic, I asked myself more and more, do I really need this----(fill in the blank with whatever.)

So in the interest of downsizing to more pragmatic stuff, I found I liked a smaller knife, lighter gun, smaller car. In the interest in efficiency, I've even went to very small pocket fixed blades, trying for that mythical "perfect knife." Maybe I'll find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow too.

Good luck with your peanut, Durban, they're great little knives. Very effcient for the size and weight, and pretty as well. You can make a very interesting collection of peanuts with all the various handle materials, and even damascus blades if you wish.

Heck, you may even build a serman around one. The little thing that gets it done. Sort of a David with his slingshot thing.

Or maybe its too early for deep thoughts, and I need a cup of coffee.

Take care.

Jackknife.

I need to join PA myself, and confess too. I think they can be considered for a centerfold spread.

Does anyone make a better looking production knife than a Case Peanut? I think not.

PA... "Peanuts Anonymous" ... I like that, kinda what i was thinking of.

Yeah Jackknife, I am slowly starting to realize, (have been young and stupid) that there is a big difference between nee and want. I like to carry Big knives, but have no reason to any more. I Like huge mega trucks, but don't need one. A smaller truck to hall stuff for our gardening, woodworking, and general utility is handy enough. I guess if I can learn some of these things around 30 instead of around 60 that may be good, although some lessons are only learned the hard way in my life/family. Either way, I am enjoying, and am suprised at all that little peanut can do. I realized I was only using two inches of a 4 inch blade, so why haul that around in my pocket?

I remember when I first saw all the comments about the lowly Peanut and thought about how "small" it was. I then bought one and for a while it confirmed my beliefs. Then one day I put it into my pocket and over the next week or so found that it did everything I asked of it. I also noted that it did not stick out in my pocket. I now carry one of my five almost every day. So I guess I too need to join PA, lets see how the mantra go, Hi my name is Steven, I am a Peanut addict.

My understanding is that now that lustus peanuticus is recognized by the AMA as a moderately debilitating condition, the pharmaceutical companies are all over it as a potential source of revenue.

It has recently been disclosed that one pharmaceutical giant was giving these mugs away outside a recent "PA" meeting in coastal Maryland:

I remember when I was growing up, that every man I knew had pocket knives, of various sizes, that they carried daily. But most, on Sunday or for special events, had a special little knife, a VERY nice one, that was their "Sunday-go-to-meetin'" knife. These were usually much smaller than their regular EDC's, often down to Peanut size.

Hmmmm... maybe I need to get one...

thx - cpr

So, while confession is good for the soul... I have one more. Although I have become a peanut convert, and have seen all that it can do, and will carry one now everyday, there are times, dressed down; hunting, woodworking, gardening, hanging out at home, where I like a bigger knife too. So I will gladly utilize the peanut, but not get rid of my big knives, they serve a purpose too, I suppose.

Barritt, sounds like the saying on the mug is just about right...;)

Good one!

I can't really add anything to whats already been said except to that peanuts are great pocket knives. Very useful, I carried my little Schrade 72ot today and it handled every chore that I needed it for. That little peanut cuts like a chain saw with a new chain.;)

Welcome to the peanut fold, yet another Jacknife convert- I hope he gets a royalty from Case!
It all I need most days.
