Well I've been off on a new tangent for me... tactical hawks. I had a local special forces (scout sniper) wanting a hawk to take with him on an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan that reminded him of home.... so I made him one from local materials (Lake Superior diver salvaged maple, leaf springs, etc)... if interested you can check it out here: http://www.bigrockforge.com/blog/?p=301 And this project led to a very unusual belt axe that I'm still working on.. here is the WIP: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/904505-W2-Forged-Integral-Hawk-WIP
Anyway... here is the last of the knives commissioned for Christmas gifts... a 9" OAL hunter made from Aldo's low MN 1075, wrought iron guard.. and the customer wanted 'jacaranda' wood to remind him of his native homeland.
This was clay treated and polished to 800... and you will notice that I got a strange and very prominent 'ara-nie' near the ricasso. Much more prominent and very 'alloy bandy' in real life. I offered to anneal and re-heat treat.. but the customer really liked the 'character' of it since it in no way affects the performance.
