If I put sandpaper around sharpmaker rods as an angle guide (I couldn't maintin an angle to save my life on a flat surface),secure it so it doesn't slip, and sharpen it that way, would it work? would it mess up a knife? What type of sandpaper would I need? and what grits should I use from start until finish? Note this is not a mod to the sharpmaker but only temporarely useing the rods as an angle guide with sand paper taped to them.

It's been done, a good automotive type wet/dry paper is the way to go. Just make sure you drag the edge rather than push, you're likely to cut into the sand paper by pushing.

I don't know how bad the edge is, but usually the 2 pairs of ceramic rods are good for most knife maintenance.

Try some 320 grit paper and if that not coarse enough go lower.

they make sandpaper with a sticky back. then all you have to do is cut your sandpaper into strips that fit on the rods, and peel/stick the paper on. its much easier that way :D

You might want to wrap the rods in blue masking tape to keep the sticky crap from the back of the adhesive backed paper off the rods.

The contact area you will be using on the sandpaper will be small, you'll probably have to rotate the paper/rod frequently as the paper wears. Otherwise the idea should work fine.
