A JOB for a knife nut?

Okay, so this might sound borderline psychotic(and maybe it is), but I'm 23 years old and I'm in a rut. I was considering going back to school again, but there really isn't anything that floats my boat as far as careers go. I was told to "do something I enjoy", and nothing really comes to mind aside from that hysterical grin on my face whenever I pop out my knife to cut something.

Besides which, my current job is a produce clerk, and I used my knife maybe 5 times today. 3 to cut plastic ties off boxes, once to cut a sample for a customer, and once to cut coupons out that the customer didn't bother to take out beforehand. The rest of the 6 hours of my 8 hour shift was spent in front of a cash register. Really seems like a disappointment when I carry 5 knives to work everyday. So as someone who has 3 knives over $400 a piece, and about 25 other knives in various "super steels" including S90V, I think my biggest dissatisfaction thus far with any of my knives is that I don't USE them enough.

So I'm looking for a career/job that involves regular use of knives as a tool. On a daily basis, where you can't go 30 minutes without cutting something. And it would be a nice bonus if it is specifically folders(can't imagine why).

Don't think I would be good as a cook or chef. Meat cutter is a consideration, but the next available opportunity won't be available until the end of this year, because for some reason, everybody wants that job:D.

Become a knife maker :)
It's funny you mention that, as I considered moving to Golden, Colorado and seeing if Spyderco was hiring:thumbup::D.

Though in all seriousness, I don't have space for a workshop and moving would get more complicated than I'm ready to deal with:rolleyes:.

Allright, ill be the boring sound of reason here :D

You need to bite the bullet and get back to school. THEN you can start looking for jobs, where you get to use a knife...and when that becomes boring routine, you'll have your degree/trade/education to fall back on.

Only job i can think of where a knife is used daily involves food-prep. People usually invent machines to do repetitive work for them.

If you want to work with knives and are willing to relocate, ive often seen that Benchmade is hiring for different positions.

Apply to be one of those dudes who chops rope/carcasses on the Cold Steel videos :D

when you first start off in a restaurant you won't be a chef or a cook without experience. what you can do is look for a job in a restaurant doing prep work, you'll be cutting stuff all day.

Should probably do those in reverse order ;)

In all seriousness, go back to school for engineering
Also might want to take a hard look at why you're carrying that many knives on your person...

don't they require you to have a purple belt in mallninjary ;)

Those guys are at least Black Belts in the art of mallnijary.

+1 on that advice! I worked for the Railroad for a few years (a lifetime ago) and an old guy used to carry a minimum of 3 to 5 handguns per day on him in the place's headquartes in Wash. D.C.

You could see them bulging out of every pocket in his pants, ankle holsters etc.. all revolvers. One of the guys turned him in. He was almost fired but kept his job.

Later, he showed me a couple of his new, discreet, single "pistol" carries after that. His obsession was that he would kill any of "them" that tried to rob him. A mental case - but in a good way. :)

I work in the landscape / yard care business. I cut a lot of sod, twine, rope, bags, boxes, plastic strapping, small branches etc..
I use mainly my Spyderco Salt 1 serrated. It is work horse.

Serial Killer. Just need to pick a specific theme for your victims, and cut away!

If you really want a job cutting meat, the National Beef packing plant here is always hiring. Most of the meat cutters end up with carpal tunnel syndrome in a few years, so there is plenty of turnover. I'm currently in building maintenence, taking care of more than a hundred apartments, and a day seldom goes by that I don't use a knife for something, but I don't often spend the entire day using one. It does happen, though.

Learn to be a machinist, it's a great trade, there's always a need and...you can learn how to make blades yourself.

I got to use my knives legitimately all the time when I was doing woodwork on boats.
Now I'm plowing snow and can't justify bringing anything but my leatherman to work... and so far I've only used the pliers and screwdrivers.
My large breed dog has disappeared in the snow a few times already. A dropped Sebenza would be lost forever.

Bummer for me. At least I have the coolest bosses on the planet now.
I never did hit it off with the natives in the yachting world anyway.

me - back in the hills:)

Become a morning stocker at Costco. Tons of shrink wrap, cardboard (both double and single width), and plastic ties to cut. Only thing is work starts at 4am. If you can handle that you'll be in heaven cutting stuff.
