Really wasn't sure what to label this give-away...8000 post give away, I feel like doing a give away, my curiosity give away...whatever, it's a give away with a challenge I am curious about. The prize is a modified Becker BK-11 with micarta scales in a stock sheath. I modified the drop point into more of a tapering drop and less abrupt (I'll post a pic later today). The rules are that entrees must have been a member of this forum for a year or less and one guess per person (it's really not very difficult). Below are just some random pictures from my random wondering yesterday. They are just posted with no text so no descriptors. There is task-oriented theme woven into this thread of random photos. I want to know the theme, I am looking for three little words.

Bonus: There are some photos that are completely antithetical to the theme. Quote those photos and tell me why they are antithetical and I'll throw in an orange nanoStriker XL from Exotac Inc to go with the BK-11.

"The rules are that entrees must have been a member of this forum for a year or less and one guess per person". Oops?

Hazard Reduction Burning. That would be my guess based on the fact that there seem to be quite a bit of fuel (deadfall and dead leaves), as well as quite a bit of fungus in those pictures, and hazard reduction burning can be used to control both and promote growth, and is usually done in cooler months.

As for the bonus, I am hard pressed for a guess on that... I would bet there are pictures of contraindication to a controlled burn, like something to do with the moisture content of the fuel or the elevational change in the terrain.

Good on you for doing a giveaway for the new people to the WS&S, Mist.

wet fire starting. tinder fungus, dead trees, sticks it trees and dry leaves

the antithetical pics are 13 16

Great giveaway idea! Congratz on 8k posts. Thanks for the chance.

Fire starting materials, seems to be the theme to me.

Pics that don't follow the theme.

1-4. These appear to be pictures taken approaching/from the area where the rest of the pictures were taken?
5 and 19. Knives aren't fire starting materials, however, they are an essential part in starting a fire in most cases.

Cheers,
Scott

standing dead wood

photos that are completely antithetical to the theme: knife photos, fungus photos

thanks for the chance!

'Starting over again'
"Starting wild fires"
"What once was"
"Cycle of life?"

I would assume that the knife pictures are the antithetical photos as they detract from the subtle beauty and powerful truth of the forest's delicate ecosystem and it's life cycle. Nothing lasts forever, everything dies and life will always follow that natural circle. The forest in and of itself is a thinking, feeling, intending being that of which is comprised of individual organisms that function as a coherent whole. The forest fire and and fungi return nutrients to the soil and allows some seeds to crack and germinate. With the new-found nutrients and lack of competition from more developed organisms, new life is able to begin to flourish, and the cycle begins again. I hope you can see what I am trying to get at here :)

Thanks for the chance!!

Primitive fire making?

And the odd pics out would be the ones of the knives as they are newer knives a opposed to flint or bone tools.

Thanks for the challenge! Intrigued to hear the outcome.

Ok, we have a winner. dryhands gets it. I'm not one for specific details as long as whoever gets the concept. The task was indeed wet-weather fire starting and "sticks in trees" tells me this person knows were to look for the driest materials, which was the gist of the post. The actual theme was "off the ground".

Lol, knife pics are pretty much a requirement here for a thread, it is Blade Forums after all, but even those were placed "off the ground", so those were not the antithetical photos. The antithetical photos were of the limbs laying on the ground and the wet bark I was prying off the tree that would have made a damp base. You got two of those so I'll throw in the orange nano XL, I just got a green one today and have another on the way.

You can email your details to me at brian[at]sewilderness[dot]com so that I can get it in the mail. I'll have a chance to get to the P.O. tomorrow, but after that it will be a few days.

Thanks everyone for participating.
